AND WIFE MADE
IT HOT FOR HIM
HOLLYWOOD.
Stan Laurel, one-time partner of Oliver Hardy, has drawn up a five-points defence in answer to the charge, on which he was arrested recently, of driving a car while drunk.
The much-married, mournful English film comedian was de- tained by a policeman, who said he found him nude to the waist and bleeding badly.
Stan told the policeman that he had just had a "terrible battle" with his wife. Now he has prepared the following de-
fonce:
1. I slaved over a hot stove all day preparing a dinner for
my wife.
2. I got madder and madder when she did not arrive and the steaks got burned.
3. When she did arrive and I berated her she went for me with the frying-pen.
4. I tried to take the telephone from her and cut my arm on the window.

6. She called me out of the house and threw sand in my face, Stan then relates how his drove off with Mr. Charles ("Bud- dy") Rogers, husband of Miss Mary Pickford, who was acting as peace- maker.
"I forgot to put on more than my shoes and trousers after getting the sand out of my clothing before fol- lowing them," adds Stan.
Meanwhile, the police surgeon has testified that Stan was sober when he to his was treated for the injury
