Had To Pay For A Kindness

After Thirty Years-£14

William Ernest Burfield

sold flowers in Covent Gar den Market. He was a poor

man.

Every evening when his work was done he went back to the two small rooms in which he lived in Penton- place, Kennington Park- road, S.E.17.

A widower for three years, he'

neigh- lived a solitary life, but his bours loved him;

He was a methodical man of sixty-

two.

WENT AWAY

The last CCT of him in Penton- place was when he went away for his summer holiday, after paying his rent in advance and leaving some money for the woman who cleaned his two rooms.

On the first day of his holiday William Ernest Burfleld collapsed and

died.

You might think that there is nothing more to his story, that there was no drama in his life. You would be wrong.

William Burfield never forgot what happened to him thirty years ago. He fell gravely ill and attend- ed Westminster Hospital. The doc- tors there cured him.

The Covent Garden Bower-seller remembered,

William Ernest Burfield had made a legacy.

He asked Mr. Hill to sell the contenta of his two little rooms and to hand over the proceeds to Westminster Hospital.

A dealer was called in, but he offered only £2 for everything.

Mrs. Annie Mackay, the daily cleaner, refused the offer. She called upon neighbours who had known and loved the Covent Garden flower salesman. They gladly came in bid for William Ernest ancient and musty furniture.

SOUTHERN RHODESIA 'PLANE CRASH

All five occupants were killed to- day when a private plane crashed near Selukwe, Southern Rhodesia, The plane belonged to the London- Rhodesian Mining and Land Com- pany. The occupants were the pilot and four members of the Rhodeslan Electricity Commission.

The commission is a public utility company supplying the electricity needs of the territory.

Selukwe is the centre of a mining, ranching and agricultural district. The surroundings are hilly.
