CYCLING. RIVALRY CONTINUES
Keen Struggle For Best All-Round Figures
R. H. McDowell twice reduced the lead established by II. A. G. Kentes in the Hongkong Cycling Club's Best) All-Rounder competition for the 1938-0 season, during the past week. On September 12, under conditions rendered difcult through rain and heavy wind, McDowell covered 5 5 SCCA. (10.000 miles in 15 mins. m.p.l.), to improve 3 secs. on hla previous best. Next day, attempting longer ride, McDowell punctured and retired at 64 miles after cover- ing the "5" in 15 mins. 12 secs.
On September 17 almost ideal con- ditions prevailed, and the same rider greatly took advantage of these to reduce both his 5 and 10 miles figures. The "5" was covered in 14 mins. 33 secs. (20.018 m.p.h.) and the "10" in 20 mins. 4 secs. (20.042 m.ph.), these Agures showing improvements of 32 and 50 secs, respectively, and are only 14 and 3 seconds slower than the times put up by II. A. G. Keates on September 0.
