EMPIRE NEWS

MORE TAXES LIKELY

IN AUSTRALÍA

Sydney.

Though Federal revenue is buoyant and a surplus of at least £2,000,000 is expected on June 30, an official warning was issued after a meeting of the Defence Council to-day that there was a strong likelihood that the next budget would include heavier taxation.

It is understood that last year's cx- panditure of £11,500,00 on defence, a record since the war, will be in- for the creased by £3,000,000 financial year 1038-39.

Part of this will go to provide an instalment of the cost of one or two new cruisers, as recommended after the Australian naval manoeuvres con- cluded a week ago. It is practically certain that the ships will be built in Britain to designs approved by the British Admiralty.

to

The whole of the new defence pro- gramme will be discussed with the Brilish authorities by Sir Earl Page, Mr. Commerce: Mr; the Minister for Menzies, Minister for Industry, and Mr. White, Minister for Trade and Customs, when they go London in March. It will include plans for ex- tended self-sufleleney in munitions.

In addition to

to provision for defence. the Government is expected provide £1,000,000 for the inaugura- tion of a national insurance scheme.

SOUTH AFRICA

£3,250,000 SURPLUS

Cape Town.

of Mr. N. C. Havengo, Minister Finance, announced in Parliament to- day that the revised estimates for the Anancial year ending March 31, 1938, £3,200,000. showed n surplus of Total surpluses since 1933 had amounted to £19,000,000, of which £9,500,000 had been spent on debt redemption.

Justifying this action in devoting surpluses to bettering the country's capital position, Mr. Havenga warned South Africa not to forget that slowly but surely her mineral resources were diminishing. Unless her capital assets

were

bullt up on a sure founda- tion a worthless legacy would be left w posterity.

During the past five years they had been able to finance a considerable portion of capital expenditure from South African resources. It had bech unnecessary to borrow money from outside and it was essential to con- tinue this policy. CANADA
