- LDOUS HUXLEY is known to the world as the man who once wrote a book describing the sort of brave now world that we must at all costs avoid.

Now he has written a book in which he describes the sort of world that all sensible people aro hoping one day to build.

But the trouble about him is that ho does not really understand the sort of obstacles thatilie in the way of build- ing He wants to build his world without oned'lifting a hand in anger- against anyone, "Non-violence" Is Bla favourite phrasó,

Now mako na bones about it: there is a vast deal of truth in Mr. Huxley's cala. If la able to point out (whist some of us are still a little Hablo to forget) that war, when it breaks out nowadays, is a frightful and disgusting thing.

Dare we let it break out? Isn't it better to make any sacrified in order to maintain pence? Oughin't wo, naks Mr. Huxley, to train ourselves to bear the first half of bullets without re- sistance so that the war-makers will soon become ashamed of themselves and stop their trickst

Non-violence can, of course, be used by an attacked people if there is a weak spot in the aggressor'a azinour", For instance, when Gandhi used non- violent methods, he knew that the weak spot in ino armour of British Imperialism was the decency of British public opinion at home.

Go far, so good. But Mr. Huxley's pacitiam can never bo a univerial remedy because there are some aggrON- Bors who have no weak spot of decency.

The men who did not finch from bombing Guernica will not stay their hand when they are ordered to bomb Mr. Huxley.

Here's the Danger

In fact, they will rejoice, over him. He is precisely the sort of adversary they want. This book, Enda and Bleans, charmingly And urbanely written though it is, outlines a foreigia policy and also a home polley which, it secma to me, would play straight into the bands of the gangster politicians.

If I were the Mikado of Japan, I should post a copy of it to every Chinese, If I were. Mussolini or [litier, I should post it to every Engilah- man, Frenchman and Russian.

And, what is more, I should place it in the library, of every one of my concentration camps. W. G. Q. B.

In The High Sherift (Constable, 75. OL), Henry Wade provides a study of a man with a secret shame, quicken. ing into a story of detection with a pot to satisfactory solution. Real trouble in the two halves do not hang together. Even so, it is n book above the averago.
