Unlike Saturday, brilliant sunshine greeted race-goers this morning at Happy Valley, making, the proceed- inga much moro enjoyable for the crowd, which again assumed large proportions.

After the rain over the week-end the track is sull on the heavy side, and fast limes are at the..., presentį moment out of the question..

His Excellency the Governor,; Sir Geoffry Northcote, and party, arrived on the course in ume to see the Art race, the Mongolian Stakes, which was won by the Dutch Stable, Hol- landia, with Piet Hein, from a feld of 25 sturlers.

CHINESE TROops go up aND OVER

Such crack troops as these, seen, skirmishing against the Japanese in this photograph, have been on the offensive in the Tientsin-Pukow railway sector lately. They "claim to have in- flicted severe losses on the Japanese in this area.

FOREIGN FLIER CLAIMS THREE OF HIS BOMBS HIT AIRCRAFT CARRIER

ין

Private advices have been received in Hongkong to the effect that the Japanese aircraft carrier which has been operating off the mouth of the Canton River recently has been successfully bombed by a Chinese plane. It is stated that the carrier has proceeded north, apparently bound for some Formosan port, with her after deck shrouded in canvas..

No confirmation can be obtained from ocial quarters, but the official version is that a lone volun- airman, carrying six heavy teer

not ель bombs, flew from Canton ago in search of the carrier. The Japanese warship was belleved to be carrying planes which persistently raided Canton's railways and ronds. The pilot, one of the men of the International Squadron operating with the Chinese, declared that three of his missiles struck the Japanese ship.

But Germany Not Displeased

French circles are disappoint ed by the resignation of Mr. Anthony Eden, who is regarded as a good friend of France: and peace, but responsible circles feel his successor will be bound to follow his policy with regard to France.-Reuter,

IMMENSE FOLLOWING IN COMMONS & COUNTRY

London, Feb. 21.

Anxiety is expressed in some quarters with regard to the possible repercussions of Mr. Anthony Eden's resigna tion. It is suggested that it may cause, a deeper rift in the Cabinet and the great body of Government supporters in the House of Commons, and may even ultimately pre- cipitate a general election.

Mr. Eden's policy, based on League of Nations principles, undoubtedly has a great following in the country. It is suggested it is also the policy of the Liberal- National and Labour-National groups in the House of Commons, and if these should decide to support Mr. Eden. some suggest that the National Government would be irra Foreign Secretary, is not cesaretted in parably impaired, and that a general election would result.

GENEVA NOT SURPRISED PE

Geneva, Feb. 21. Mr. Anthony Eden's resignation has

not surprised Geneva, nor is it entire ly unwelcome here to those who allege that recent tendencies of British polley might ultimately come into conflict with the high ideals of the Covenant, and that negotiations with Italy might break away from the principles upon which the League

is hased.

It is feared that although a stronger policy, may be pursued by the British Government it may itself be weakened by the crisis-Reuter,
