BRAVE NEW

Gangster WORLD

ENDS AND MEANS

By Aldous Huxley (Chatto and Windus, 8e. GAI.

LDOUS HUXLEY is known to the world.ps the man who once wrote a book describing the sort of brave new world that we must at all costs avald,

Now he has written a book in which he describes the sort. of world that all sensible people are hoping one day to bulla.

But the trouble about him is that he does not really understand the sort of abstacles that lie in the way of build- ing it. He wants to build his world without once Iiting a hand in anger against anyone., " Non-violence" is hits favourite phrase.

Dare We?

Now make no bones about it: thero is a vast dent of truth in Mr. Hurley's case. He is able to point out (wint some of us are still a little able to forget that war, when it breaks out nowadays, is a frightful and disgusting thing.

Dare we let it break out? Isn't it boller to make any sacrifice in order to maintain pence? Oughtn't wo, asks Mr. Huxley, to train ourselves to bear the Brat hall of bullets without re sistance so that the war-makers will toon become ashamed of themselves and stop their tricks?

Non-violence can, of course, be used by an attacked people if there is n weak spot in the aggressor's armour. For instance, when Gandhi used non- violent methods, he know that the weak spot in the armour of British Imperialism was the decency of British public opinion at home.

So far, so good. But Mr. Huxley's paolism can never be a universal remedy because there are some aggres- Bors who have no weak apot of decency, The men who did not flinch from bombing Guernica will not stay their hand when they are ordered tó bomb Mr. Huxley,

Here's the Danger

In fact, they will rejoice over him. He is precisely the sort of adversary they want, This book, Ends and nicans, charmingly and urbanaly written though it is, outlines a foreign policy and also a home policy which, it Acoms to me, would play straight into the hands of the gangster politicians. If I were the Mikado of Japan, I should post a copy of it to every Mussolini or Chinese. If I were Hitler, I should post it to every English- man, Frenchman and Russian,

And, what is more, I should place it in the library of every one of my

W. G. o. a. concentration camps.

CRIME-JIGSAW

'OU have to hand it to Agatha Christie every time. In Death on the Nile (Collins, 78. 0d), she again pops her pea gally under the thimble, dazzles and dazes with the brilliance of her sleight of hand and importinently produces the pen from the very place where It positively could not be,

That it is ten to one against a murder being successfully done in such a way is in these circum- staneca a small matter.

Proceed with Caution, the title of John Rhode's new Dr. Priestley story Intoon Collins seven-and-sixponny). necurately sums up a very different method, There is no great difficulty in spotting a most ingenious criminal, but you'll read happily on for the solid natiafaction of seeing how the Jig-aw falls into place.

In The High Sheriff (Constable, T. Gd.), Ienry Wade provides a study of a man with a secret shame, quicken- ing into a story of detection with a not too satisfactory solution. Real trouble is the two halves do not hang together. Even so, it is a book above the average.

Altogether a pretty good week..

graphical mood throughout most of This long, authentie and absorbing book. Ha is neither terrified nor dis- gusted. Ho obviously sat down deter mined record and he has evoked the pathetic, infuriating, inextricably confused shade of the Last Grent Bohemian, the man Verlaine.

Above all, he has unearthed some characteristic anecdotes. I especially lko the tale of the journal which paid the poet Ove francs for a sonnel.

Verlaine went back the next day and said he had been given a bad coin. The cashier apologised and handed him another live-frane piece. As ho was going away the cashier asked him for the bad eno. "Oh," said Verlaine, "I assure you that I had the very greatest dinculty in passing it."

THE EDUCATION OP HYMAN KAPLAN

By Leonard, q. Ross (Constable, 58.)

TELCOME to another laughter-raiser from the United States. Mr. Kaplan

or H*Y*M*A*N K*A*P*L*A*N, as he alens himself in various gloriously coloured inks-is a comfa character who would have delighted old Mark Twain.

A pupil in a class of adult immi- granta learning to master the Anteri can language in a New York night- school, ho reaches aublime heights of logical absurdity, endearing himself to u by: the .persistent vigour of his attack and his pitying scam for lis fellow-scholars ·

None of that worn-out stuff about "plough," "cough" and "rough" for Hyman. His struggles are something now in history. One of them concerns his fallure to distingulah between “e and "a." "Asked the meanink (I mean meaning" of the word "vast," he answers radiantly, "It's commink from diraction.. Ve have four diractions; de naut, de sot, the heast nad de vest."

Badly corrected, he volunteers, "Heu Kay. Ven I'm buyink a suit of clothes. I'm gattiek de cawt, de penta an' de VRst! Good for Hymani

Boch (sorry, I should say "auch ")

- every right, when he is crl. Licised for siguing a letter, "Your animated brother," to decide,, "by dip tinking" that the correct and only description of himself should be that beautiful vold ("word" to you),, "megnificent,"

CANDLE IN THE SUN By Edlib Roberts (Harrap, 84. GU.) (OONER or inter, a ravi3wer of novels finds he is prepared for the worst that is, he antici- pates it. At least, I often do.

I see in advance the sad hash which promising going to be made of theme, the frightful bog of sentimental slush which threatens to engulf the unwary author. So, when I find my feats are groundless, when I read a story by a new writer that not only starts brightly but enda sanely after a steady run, I appreciate it all the more.

I had my forebodings about Candle in the Sun. A young American girl romantically initiied to the spoilt kon of a West Indian familly: the hint of Negro- blood: seenes of exotic splen dour: the collapse of illusion and the arrival the upztanding white man she might have inarried... You can understand why I trembled.

But I was agreeably disappolated. The story docan go soggy at any point. It remains vigorous, realistic picture of Latin-American life, and young Avery, from New England, sud- denly. Gung inta such different and dis- turbing surroundings, is quite a person, As our grandparents used to say.

She resolutely faces the fact that her. husband is a wash-out. Her child has allen blood in him:--No-one can spare
