SHATTERED BY BOMBARDMENT

Bitter Resistance At Tingyuan Encountered

Shanghai, Feb. 3.

The capture of Pengpu, as recorded by Japanese despatches from the front, has greatly surprised observers here who expected the Chinese would hold up the attack- ing force for at least a few days. The occupation of this city is important, inasmuch as it boasted the strongest de- fence works south of Hsuchow, the main object of the present drive.

Pengpu, moreover, is an important industrial centre in Anhwei and in the course of its history has more than once found contending forces in civil wars fighting for its possession.

The Ja anese now have a little more than 100 miles to go before they reach Hauchowfu, so unless the Chinese collapse their task is still a large one.

of

According 10 Japanese sources the attack on. Pengpu was launched at dawn yesterday by the right wing the advancing uriny which marched along the Tientsin-Pukew railway and proceeded to the assault after one of the most intensive bombardments of the present war.
