150 SHIPS FOR U.S. MANOEUVRES IN PACIFIC BIGGER FORCE THAN EVER BEFORE 50,000 MEN & 500 'PLANES

TEST OF LONG-RANGE OPERATIONS

An outline programme of the forthcoming United States naval manoeuvres in the Pacific, re- colved from Washington, shows them to bo on a much larger scale than has ever before been attempted.

Both the magnitude of the forces engaged and the scene of the exercises Invest them with special significance.

Adm. Claude C. Bloch, who be

From then till the end of April 1801 hips and 500 aircraft, manned by 50,000 offers and men, will be engaged in sham warfare over a vast area of the Pacile. The main theatre of operations is the Alaska-Hawail- California triangle.

This year the Fleet will pencirate nearer to Far Eastern water than ever before. Some ships will even stcum as far as the island of Kiska, the westernmost unit of the Aleutian group, 600 rules trom the nearest Japanese territory.

Kista is now oficially classed as a United States muval base. It is thus closed to mercantile shipping.

Other Insular buses far out in the Pacific which the fleet will use are Wake, Midway, Howland and Baker islands. The total distance to bel steamed by the feet will run into hundreds of thousands of miles.

TO LAST SIX WEEKS Omelily, the aim of the manoeuvres is to test the defences of a line drawn from the Aleutian Island south through Hawall to Samos.

I is believed, however, that an underlying purpose is to test the ability of the battle fleet to engage In war operations and maintain itself! in waters 3,000 miles across the Pacife from the American mainland.

Among the forces taking part are 12 battleships, three or four aircraft carriers, 17 heavy and 10 Hight crutsers,a great number of destroyers and submarines, and an armada of aircraft tenders, tankers, depot ships and supply vessels.

The defending feel will be cam- manded. by Admil. E. C. Kalbtus and. the "enemy" force by Vice-Adml, W. T. Tarrant, while Admi. Bloch will

The manoeuvres will lust from March 14 to April 29, but the "op- posing fleets will be at sea well In advance of the opening date.

There is no confirmation of a Washington report that the date of the exercises to be advanced by several weeks in consequence of the Far Eastern situation.
