GIFT TO WEST
Mr. Sloss said!
A
It is my pleasant duty to thank Your Excellency for coming to open what I hope is only the first of a series of exhibitions of Chinese art to be held in
Library. The this Library itself, gift to the Univer- ally from the late Mr. Fung Ping- shan, is a symbol that shows that though we are here to offer the gifts of the Intellectual life of the west to Hongkong and to China, we do so recognising that we come as learn- ers also, to take back to the west the wisdom and something of humanity of the ageless culture of China.

Some of us feel that the directest approach to the Chinese spirit is through the manifold beauties Chinese art: that in the contempla- tion of its serenity its nusters rejec tion of what is trivial and adventi tious we and our Chinese friends are preparing the ground by common admiration and by a common sense of acathetic values. In the presence of this wealth of beauty diferents vanish and we are "in unity of spirit and in the bond of peace" as our prayer book has it, contempinte the achievements of man's nobier mind.
GOVERNOR'S PRE-VIEW wish to thank the lenders of these treasures and to assure them of the genuineness of our appreciation of their kindness in allowing us to share their possessions with them. As you go round you will see on the cards to whom we are indebted and it will be my pleasant task to acknowledge our indebtedness to them in the Press and Individually.
Your Exceliency has shown at every tura since your arrival your koen interest in the well-being of the University and my colleagues and I are heartened by this I can assure the friends of the University who have let us their treasures, of your Excellency's appreciation of them shown yesterday by a visit to our exhibition which ended only by the failure of daylight, We are deeply indebted to Your Excellency. (Applause).
The lenders of pictures included the following: Messrs. Mok Kon- sang, Chow Man-chi, Wong Seng- Iseng, Haino Shao-man, Leung Kiu- wel, Lim Kuei-song, Chan Shu-kai, LI Shoung-ming, Li King-hong. Yip Chi-chow, Poon Pok-chuen, Poon Lan-chuen, Ale Cheung Kunyi.
