Scottish Rugby Union Says No

London, Oct. 31.

There is little doubt that Scothnd-despite the Auld Alliance -stands in the way of a reunion of British and French Rugby, writes John Macadam in the Sunday Dispatch. The feeling in England is all towards a healing of the breach, for the French have given what appears to be fairly convincing proof of their dissociation from the semi-professionalism tangle, in which they were alleged to be involved some years ago.

I asked one of the Scottish Rugby omcials last week whether or not)

Scotland would consider a softening Runner

of their attitude. He stood not upon the order of his answering, but said,

| bluntly:

Turns To

Rugger

To Meet Schmeling

23,

1937.

Max Schmeling, Germany, former heavy-weight champion of the world, Jast month accepted an offer to fight Ben Foord, former British and Em- pire heavy-weight champion, Hamburg, on January 30.

n

The contest will be of vital interest to both boxers. Ford, ever since he lost his titles to Tommy Farr, has big been trying to get back into boxing, and this fight will give him bis chance-it is good enough.

"The question of resuming the matches with France has not been raised in Scotland this season, nur] is it kely to be. The situation. remains the same as it. hus becni since the break. We are afraid that A. G. K. Brown, the famous inter- the French Union has not yet putational quartermiler, has turned This attention to rugger. Last month Its house in order."

That's pretty straight, and may beat Cambridge he scored a magnificent Scotland is right. A cartoon ap-try for l'eterhouse in his first inter peared recently in Football, the Paris college match.

It was the result of a run right sporting paper. The caption reads:

"That's all right. The referee is alesitated, a second swerve outwards, candidate for Parliament and we are now at full speed. The chief fea- his electors."

CRICKET FIXTURES

A victory over Schmeling, ranked as second only to Joe Louis, the world champion, would put Foord well up in the waiting list of chal- lengers for the title, and equally it would upset the promised fight be tween Schmeling and Louis.

Walter Neusel, after his victory over Maurice Strickland, returned to Berlin in the hope of fixing up a contest with Schmeling, but in view of the Foord engagement such a fight is not now likely to materialise.

ture of the whole movement was not the speed at which it was actually achieved, but the delightfully con- trolled swerve and pace variation.
