CHINESE CONTINUE TO PUSH NORTH
DESPITE OCCASIONAL CLASHES
Action Centres Along Railroads;
Evacuation Considered Foreign
Nanking, Aug. 5.
The United States Embassy has been advised that the Japanese military authorities at Tientsin have warned the foreign Consular the body that unless the Chinese cease concentrating forces along Peiping-Hankow and Tientsin-Nanking railways the resumption of hostilities is inevitable.
Accordingly, it is now considered that the question of whether or not to evacuate foreign nationals from danger areas depends entirely upon whether the Chinese continue to concentrate or withdraw their troops southward.
Meanwhile, Marshal Chiang Kai-shek continues to meet the various provincial commanders, from north and south.
Last night Shansi's
he was in close conference with General Yen Hsi-shan, powerful military chief. They discussed defence measures for the northern provinces.

London, Aug. 4
Contrary to what was expert- ed earlier in the afternoon, M. Ivan Maisky. the Soviet Am- bassador, when he saw Lord Plymouth, chairman of the Non- Intervention Committee, did not convey to him the modification of Russia's views regarding non- intervention in Spain.
M. Maisky to-night declared that the statement circulated In London alleging modifleation of the Soviet's position regarding belligerent rights, lucked foundation.

The chairman's sub-committee will probably meet on Friday-Reuter.
It is the Russian contention that ali foreign volunteers must be with- drawn from Spain before belligerent rights are granted either side. In this the Soviet is diametrically opposed to Italy and Germany. Britain and France, while favouring the withdrawal before the granting of belligerent rights, appear open to compromise. Not so Moscow.
