KEEPING FOOD
D
0 you And that housekeeping billa go up with leaps and bounds during spells of hot weather? Bummer appetites, especl- ally the children's, are some- what finicky; milk and other perlatiable food often has to bo written on because it Ins "turned" overnight, and to save waste it is necessary to buy in smaller quantities, often at higher prices.
To my mind the advantages of buying in bulk when foods are at their cheapest is one of the best arguments for an electric re- frigerator.
It will soon pay for itself if you balance the cost against the price of food which would otherwise
have been wasted during the
summer months.
Advance Cooking
Dus at the same time I don't want you to think of it only as a summer- time possession. It is almost impos. sible to keep either kitchen or larder Bulelenity cool for food storage, even during the winter.
You have probably noticed this on the dayn when bathi cooker and boiler are going, nnd steain from cooking or webing adds to the warmth, too.
The refrigerator is extra' useful, for
it enables you to plan for leisure dur- ing the summuner, Menia can be prepared well in advance and storet all ready to serve or to re-heat as re- quired,
Complete week-end menus can be worked out on Friday, and most of the necessary cooking fished by Baturday morsink. To show you what I memi, here is one suggestion for the prin- elpal Baturday and Sunday meala,
Saturday supper consists
cold tinned almon and salad and jam tori. Mid-day dinner on Sunday either cold roast or hot minced beef, patatoes and greens, vanilla cream and stewed fruit.
Week-End Menus
Cold beef and salad for supper an Sunday, with lemon Jelly garnisited with any left-over cream,
These are three good and substan- tial meals, yet the week-end cooking time is less than half an hour. Even
the dough for the pantry can be made on Baturday morning, and left in the refrigerator unti wanted, and the Rame applies to dough for scones for Sunday tea.
Salud and greens, by the way, should

First Job
MOST people feel pretty small. their first day at
work.
But a little forethought helps a lot. Make a few resolutions before you set off.
Don't cling limpet fashion to the people who befriend you. Because you are sure to be sorry afterwards if you get too confi- dential right away. Don't plan always to have elevenses with your first-day friend.
Don't grumble about the cloakroom, office, or canteen, saying you're used to very different goings-on at home. Or if you are impressed, don't give away that you never expected anything HO grand.
Don't join office clubs till you've had a chance to find out if you'd enjoy them. Don't go gay your first week. Have early bedtimes; you'll be tired.

Put cut flowers here and there in the spaces between the cubes, and you have a cool and original centre- plece.
Time To Defrost
Do be sure to turn out the refrigera tor once a week just na you would the lorder. When new, the inside of the cabinet should be washed with warm water containing a little bicarbonate of soda, rubbed dry, and the door left open for an hour or two before you replace the shelves.
Warm water alone is sufficient for the routine weekly clean. Remove all the food. empty the ice-trays, and wash and dry the interfor before replacing the food. The outside could be

Make sure. incidentally, that the model you have chosen in large enough before you finally decide, bearing in mind, that you may need some extra space when you have visitors in the house.
Cold Storage
One cubic fool capacity per head and one over is a good average. As an family of four you example, for a would choose a refrigerator with a capacity of five cubic feet.
There are different zones of cold inside the cabinet, and if you study the chart which comes with the refri- gerator, you will soon discover the best alorage spots for various kinds uf food.

On the shelt below this come meat, soups and left-overs, with vegetables and salads in the apecini container t the bottom. The most economical way to store battles is to keep them lying down next to the salud container,
Home-made Ices
Whenever possible, food should be wrapped in grenseproof paper, as this saves the space which would other- wise be occupied by plates and dishes. The freezing chamber is a most in- portant part of the refrigerator. Tom- rature here is below freezing point. The trays provided in it enable you to freeze ice cubes, and to make ice cream and ice pudding of all kinds.

Moreover, the correct fitting of every pair of shoes, from the first soft kid or silken slipper onwards. is most important, To allow the foot's free development on proper lines, the shoe must be sufficiently wide, as well as long enough, and is essential that it should it very snugly round the heel.
When the baby reaches the toddler staffe and runs out-of-doors, his shoes should still have very supple soles; and as soon as the child coines indoors both socks and shoes should be changed, as this airs and refreshes the young feel and helps to keep the skin soft and healthy.
