FOR

four years Mr. H. G. Wells, Britain's most famous living author, has fought against the dread disease of diabetes and has fought successfully.

Diabetes, which has taken a huge toll of human life, threatened to cut short Mr. Well's career.

Mr. Wells conquered the handicap.

What he is agitating for, above all, is the recognition by employers that diabetes, properly treated, is not a disabling disease in workaday life.

"There are some 100,000 diabetics

the country to-day, and a lot of people are afraid to employ them Re-because they don't want a sick man

"My story starts four years ago," he said. "I was listless, dult, and Inefficient.

"MY SALVATION"

"At an early stage of the trouble I had the good luck to go to the head of a diabetle cilnle nt a famous Lon- don hospital. It was my salvation.

"I do not have to use Insun. My: trouble was tackled in good time. It was only necessary for the doctor to train me for a new dietary and ever since I have tried to observe it to the letter.

"You could not call it a strict or dimeult diet. It is what you might call an intelligent diet.

"There are certain foods and drinks which I must avold. When invlled ont I have to take my own choice from what my hostess offers me.

I must avold bread, sweet things, sweet wines and champagne. On the other hand, I can drink red wine and most spirits it I care to, and I can smoke.

"Breakfast and tea are the difficult meals, for it is then you may be tempted to cat toast or bread."

HIS GRATITUDE Grateful for the treatment he has received, Mr. Wells was instrumental in launching two years ogo the Dlabetic Association, of which he is the president.

And it is only when they get thorough- ly cross and miserable that you real- ite that they are constipated. I find it saves a world of sickness and worry to give them a regular weekly dose. I would do that if I were you. With a natural laxativo like Cali- fornia Syrup of Figs" you can't go wrong.

"Doctors recommend it and give it to their own children, und wo nurses swear by it. Get a bottle of 'Call- .fornia Syrup of Figs” from the drug store and give him a dose at bed- Ume. He'll be as happy as a lark in the morning.

"Never experiment with cheap and drastic preparations when buying children's laxatives. The safest plan is to do as I do, follow the example of the doctors and give 'California Syrup of Figs."
