After a narrow escape from death when a giant RA.F. flying boat crashed in taking off during the recent Singapore manoeuvres, the officer and crew made gallant at- tempts to reach Pilot Officer Blair, who was trapped in the wrecked hull 20 feet below the surface of the sea.

They failed to do so, however, and a naval diver, who went down later, last week described to Singapore Coroner the dimeulties that he experienced in a under- water search.

At the conclusion of the inquiry, the Coroner returned a verdict of death by misadventure and pointed out that Squadron Leader Butes, the pilot, had been exonerated from all blame at an inquiry held at the R.A.F. Base, Seletar.
