A JOURNEY UP THE YANGTSE RIVER

THE BUSY RIVER PORT OF CHUNGKING: The towering cliff fronting the river against which are built the frail homes of some of the poorer folk. Chungking is the centre for the trade of a large area of south-west China, goads being brought to it by junk on the Yangtze from the coast, and distributed from there by smaller vessels going up the various tributaries.

FICKING HER WAY THROUGH THE SHOALS AND SANDBANKS: A typical passenger vessel passing upstream en the'dan- gerous 400-mile journey between Ichang, Hupeh Province, and Chungking, Szechwan Province. This section of the Yangtze is the most hazardous of, all, and it was not until 1898 that Archibald Little built the first steamer to make the trip. Fifteen years later a regular service was instituted, and nowadays boats pass up and down with regularity and frequency. But their safety depends entirely on the skill and ceaseless watchfulness of the pilots who belong to `n Government-run organisation and reach a high atandard of efficiency,
