Shanghai, Dec. 23,

Silence reigns over Sianfu and the situation there, and no direct news from that quarter has been received during the past 24 hours.

In the meantime, although Madame Chiang Kai-shek is with her husband, in company with a distinguished party, including her brother, Mr. T. V. Soong and Mr. W. H. Donald, adviser to the Marshal, the encirclement of the city of Sianfu con- tinues apace. The Central Government troops are rapidly closing in.

The vanguards of the punitive expedition, directed by General Ho Ying-ching, the War Minister, are advancing on Weinan. Here the rebels are being heavily rein. forced and, an attempt is apparently to be made to check the swift progress of the Government forces.-United Press.

The Archbishop of York has rebuked Ex-King Edward in a diocesan letter, on the ground that the monarch fell in love with another man's wife.
