Efforts To Release Chiang, Kai-Shek So Far Fruitless

NANKING TROOPS DRIVE REBELS TO WEINAN; STAND EXPECTED

Shanghai, Dec. 23,

Silence reigns over Sianfu and the situation there, and no direct news from that quarter has been received during the past 24 hours.

In the meantime, although Madame Chiang Kai-shek is with her husband, in company with a distinguished party, including her brother, Mr. T. V. Soong and Mr. W. H. Donald, adviser to the Marshal, the encirclement of the city of Sianfu con- tinues apace. The Central Government troops are rapidly closing in.

The vanguards of the punitive expedition, directed by General Ho Ying-ching, the War Minister, are advancing on Weinan. Here the rebels are being heavily rein. forced and, an attempt is apparently to be made to check the swift progress of the Government forces.-United Press.

ANOTHER CHURCH LEADER SPEAKS

DUTY VERSUS LOYALTY

London, Dec. 22.

The Archbishop of York has rebuked Ex-King Edward in a diocesan letter, on the ground that the monarch fell in love with another man's wife.

The letter opened mildly, drawing attention to the fact that therto there had been no statement from him regarding the constitutional crisis. He added, however, that he felt it necessary to mention certain polats at this juncture;

First, he said, Britain had emerged from the crisis unweakened, but strengthened and more, deeply com- mitted than ever to the democratic principle of Parliament's supremacy. Secondly, he continued, there was some danger that the nation's regrets at the loss of Edward's brilliant qualities might bring forgetfulness of tie necessity of a painful choice which ought never to have arisen.
