It has been, like the days that went before, a very strenuous day Though of mountain motoring..

it is yet too early to talk of results, it has been an excellent affair so far, a stern test of machine and driver.

But why are Brilish motorists neg Tecting this form of competition? It cannot be--in fact we know it is not- that our motor-cars are not muitable for this sort of strenuous oversENs driving, Yet that is exactly what the Average continenta moturist is think. ing to-day.

All of them very fine rare,

But I do wish we would carry on the good work.

There are Brith ears which could have won every single prize in this Alpine Trial, of that I am quite sure, But they will not this year, though all honour is due to the private owners and the two manufacturers who have "shown the flag" in this year's event.

upon which I have spent many "happy hours, and-one-with-which I have hitherto considered myself well acquainted.

To-day, however, it has played a prank on me and shorn me of over- reaching pride. This morning we elimbed out of Borrowdale and up the sleep flanks of Combe Gil to the wish- ful ittle Tarn at Leaves, which lies hidden in a hollow between Bossyboot and the ergs of Rosthwaite Fell."

A hot most morning it was, one which would have rug perspiratou out of the leanest of mountaineers. It was a day such as that which induced a corpules climber to remark thing the rich colouring of the Lake District was not entirely due to its coplous rainfall The awent of toiling climbers, he con- terled, was also a contributing factor.

Everchanging Air

On the erogs we basked and looked back over Borrowdale, over sunlit Der- wentwater to the blue heights of Skid- daw, on which the clouds hung low, Once we had climbed out of the dale we found it a little cooler, but there was nothing of that invigorating fresh- nes que looks for on the hills; nothing like that lively, blustering wlad we had enjoyed on Helvellyn the previous day. Olarmara is not a simple ridge, but ls more like a rugged, spine with numerous distorted and displaced vertebrae.

While we munched our sandwiches, itle strap wisps of cloud were floating round, leking the thimble-top of Pike of Sickle, trailing in streamers across the slopes of Bow Fell and 'spuming the height of and billowing Coniston,
