a large converted mansion on Campdenhill, Holland Park, W., engineers are producing apparatus capable of projecting television, pic- tures on to a full-size cinema screen.

The 150-year-old garden outside provides a strange contrast with the complicated apparatus inside, which embodies the latest developments in radio science.

"While United States experimenters continue to talk of television pictures in terms of inches, the Scophony engineers are developing apparatus for pictures many square feet in size," Mr. F. Sagall, of Scophony Television, Ltd., told me.

I saw a film of Jessie Mathews in "First a Girl" projected on to a screen measuring 4ft. Gin. by 3ft. Gin. The lighting was excellent. Although I was standing 20 feet away, it would have been better if the serven had been 50 feet away.

AMAZING DETAIL

At the side of this apparatus was a smaller receiver for checking purposes. This showed pictures measuring 10 by 8 inches, and the detail was amazing, One could clearly follow two cars in the film racing round a distant winding moun- tain rond. The subtle qualities of light and shade so necessary for good pictures were all there. The picture remained steady and clear.

the

Unlike

most other television systems, no high voltages are used. The highest in the receiver will not exceed 250 volts, and it la possible to obtain results with as low na volls. This means that houses nôt supplied with electric light will still be able to "looks-in" with battery television receivers.

Scophony engineers are develop- ing a standard receiver for home use, which will provide pictures 18in. by 12ln.

TREMENDOUS PROGRESS

I passed from the laboratory, which won originally the ballroom, into un- other large hall, where there was n full-size cinema screen. The ap- paratus for producing pictures of this size is nearly complete.

Tremendous progress has been" made since I saw the Scophony demonstration a few years ago, The apparatus hus been simplified, largely due to the optical develop- ments of Messrs. J. 11. Jeffree and G.

W. Walton, who are responsible for

SENT FOR TRIAL

Recently Clay was committed for trial at the Old Bailey accused of murdering Phyllis Brace, his sweet- heart.

Mr. E. Clayton, prosecuting, said that in Juse Clay entered Epping Institution. He was there as a patient until he asked for his discharge. On June 22, about 11 n.m., Miss Bruce callet nt Epping Institution. Clay, ngaints medical advice, took his own discharge.

On July 23 Clay was found near Theydon Bois ly- ing near a heap of stones. Clay said:

"I have been in the forest. I have had some drugs. There is a girl in the forest. She may be dead."

A doctor saw Clay and ordered his removal to bos- pital; and the girl was found dead in Epping Forest next day.

Detective Inspector Claud Smith said that Clay made a statement in which he said: "We discussed the question of marriage, but it was im- possible owing to my condition. The fear of having children who may be afflicted was too great.”

The alleged statement described how they went to Epping Forest. "We walked into the forest towals Theylon Bois until we found a suit- able spot to rest," it went on.

"About 12.30 p.m, we began to take ABC tablets and barbitone, which Phyllin had brought with her.

"We decided about a year ago that life was not worth living, and to take the best way out of 1.' We de- elded the best way was to take tablets.

"I should say we took afly graing of barbitone and forty-five grains of ABC. I went to sleep."

Later the alleged statement said: "Phyllis was lying in a swamp try- ing to get out. I tried to help her, but could not get hold. It was rain- ing hard.

"There was a razor in the case. I got it out to use on myself. I could not do it, and I used it on her. I tied her left leg to me when we first lay down.

"She was unhappy, and I wish now to die in any case. I wish to say I um very sorry that I have caused suffering to her parents,"
