no criticism of Aldous Huxley's long new novel could be more devastating than the three words with which he has Gaza named it, Eyeless. in (Chatto and Windus, 108. Od.)..

For Milton's pitiful picture of Sumson, "eyeless in Gaza at the antil with alaves," prepares us all Loo distressingly for what follows

another blistering session on the Huxleylau treadmill, while the overseer, like some intellectual Blion Legree, whispers at us and, lashes us on through the gloom.... Amiable and aimless, he staggers along, accidentally causing Irtenda mtelde, taking his live where lar Ands I (or where it is forced upon km), hesitating on the edge of action. soliloquising from time to time (now penetrating and now platitudinous), to make a tomentary escape from the irrnum in the end.

Hi, though I found Eyeless in Claza disappointing, it is unques- tionably significant, symbolic, in ita very confusion, of a host of renson- able, well-meaning, anxious people of our day and generation. (Becker Verdun and Warburg, 2s. 6d.).

Blower in pace and more diffuse, it tells the hideous story of those few months in 1916 when Verdun was the worst hell of all of the helis of the Great War.

Hundreds of thousands of French- men and Oermans were lost there.in the bail of millions of shells. Whole battalions Were wiped out and bricked ut where they tay....

His most readable book, Tumanity, (Jarrolds Ale Power and 125. Gd.), argues the ease for such a force with clarity and sometimes with eloquence.

Bome will feel that there will have to bo a stage of co-operation between national forces before an international force will be accepted by governments or peoples. A Mad World

a masterpiece of ingenious sophistry, which persuaded Wilson that all money that had been paid in separation allowances, or that would be paid in war pensions, could fairly be regarded asdamage to the civilian population by land, by sea and from the air!"

What did the Bmuta who wrote those eloquent, protests think of the Smuts who wrote that adroit muncr- nudum? Or did the one not think of the other? Does the one never think of the other?

Does Smuts, the great humanitarian, the preacher of peace and of sanity. never think of Smuts who authorised the "massacre of Bullhoek" in 1921. of Smuts who ordered the bombing of the Bondelswarts in 19227
