Cantonese Armies Shortening Lines

EVACUATED

Chinese news sources report skirmishing between the vanguards of the Central Government troops and the Kwangtung forces north of Shiukwan. They first clashed on Tuesday.

It is stated that the Kwangtung troops evacuated Shiukwan in order to shorten their line of defence and to concentrate their fighting strength on Kwentin and Yuan- tam, south of Yingtak.

The greater part of Kwangtung's air force is now con- centrated at Canton, which is the hub of operations, and where military officers are in almost constant 'conference.

It is understood that the Nanking troops are advancing simultaneously from Hunan, Kiangsi and Fukien, having commenced their forward movement on Tuesday.'

They are expected to strike from { Fukien in a westerly direction, Prom Kiangel they will come from the north-east and from Hunan they will come from the north.

It is also expected that Nanking troops will move on Kwangsi from Hunan and Kweichow and Yunnan.

Barring further major developments abroad, and assuming a continuance of industrial peace in Britain, there is every reason to hope that the progress of the past few years will continue, declared Mr. Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, in review- ing the trade position in the House of Commons to-day. For some time, said Mr. Runciman, British exporters' hopes will be concentrated on an expansion of trade with the Empire and the rest of the sterling. nations, although the whole of world trade reveals encouraging features. There had been year of marked progress in nearly all the principal industries, notable exceptions being coal and cotton. Progress was remarkably good in industries supply- ing the home markets. The improvement had been widespread and was best illustrated by the unemploy ment figures.
