TRADE BOOMS IN BRITAIN Concentrating On Empire Markets
IMPORTS TOTAL CAUSES
LITTLE CONCERN
London, July 15. Barring further major developments abroad, and assuming a continuance of industrial peace in Britain, there is every reason to hope that the progress of the past few years will continue, declared Mr. Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, in review- ing the trade position in the House of Commons to-day. For some time, said Mr. Runciman, British exporters' hopes will be concentrated on an expansion of trade with the Empire and the rest of the sterling. nations, although the whole of world trade reveals encouraging features. There had been year of marked progress in nearly all the principal industries, notable exceptions being coal and cotton. Progress was remarkably good in industries supply- ing the home markets. The improvement had been widespread and was best illustrated by the unemploy ment figures.
Railway receipts, despite road and sea competition, were nearly £2,000,000 higher in the first half of 1936, besides which there was an increase of £4,000,000 in postal receipts.
