AN annual saving on the Royal Civil List of £155,900 is assured as long as the King re- mains unmarried, according to the report of the Select Committee of the House of Commons which considered the matter.

This is partly because the King is retaining for his privy the revenues of the Duchy of Cornwall, and not drawing £70,000 provided for in the Civil List.

The King also wishes to provide out of the Duchy revenues the extra £25,000 annuity recommended for the Duke of York in view of his heavier duties as heir presumptive.

The total of the list is £410,-1 000, compared with £170,000| proposed for King George in 1010.

The committee further recommends that, should the Duke of York die while heir presumptive, the £25,000| annuity should be continued in trust for the duchess and the surviving children as long as there is no heir aurent.

Germany has rearmed the Rhineland. Turkey proposes to rearm the Straits. The question arises whether demili- tarised and neutralised zones elsewhere can be preserved. These zones exist at many points as shock absorbera between countries that have clashed in the past.

Some of the zones are designed to protect the inde- pendence of small states. Others safeguard waterways of international importance.
