WOMAN who has travelled 10,000 miles

to begin a sentence of life imprisonment has reached England.

She is Mrs. Katherine Had- ley, sentenced to death at Shanghai in 1933 for the 'mur- der of Captain Walter Clifford Youngs, former British mer- cantile marine officer.

Mrs. Hadley was re- commended to mercy, and was granted a re- prieve on December 12, 1933.

The sentence was commuted to imprisonment for life.

She travelled in the P. and O. liner Naldera, and was in charge of two police officers and a nurse.

On arrival in London she was taken to Holloway prison, where. she began her imprisonment in England.

It is only on rare, 'occasions that a prisoner, is removed from overseas territory to this

"These transfers are made inder the Colonial Prisoners Re- moval Act of 1884," an official) said.

"They involve the issuing of a warrant by the Home Secretary, and the question of removal is usually raised by the Governor of the Colony concerned."
