CHIEF JUSTICE'S REMARKS ON FORGED NOTE CASE "This type of offence is becoming far too common....So far as it is in my power I am going to stop it." Thus said the Chief Justice, Sir Atholl MacGregor, at the Criminal Sessions yesterday afternoon, when ho passed sentence of two and a half years' hard labour on Li Yiu, a 50- year old ex-seaman who was charged with (a) uttering a fored $10 bank- note of the Chartered Bank of India. Australia and China on August 23, and with (b) having in his possession a forged $10 bank-note of the same bank on August 24,

Mr. J. A. Fraser, Assistant At- torney-General, instructed by Mr. W. J. Lockhart-Smith, Assistant Crown Soliciter, appeared for the prosecu tlon; the accused was not legally presented.

The Jury empanelled comprised Messrs. B. W. Shumon (Foreman). F. J. da Luz. Lu Chung-chih, Li Jick- ting, Lam Ho-kwan, Hugh King-les and E. Quinlan.

Forged Nute Passed

On August 23 the necusevi went to Brewood fenler's hut ut Sai Yeung Choi Street, Yaumati and bargained with a man named Yung Mun for a dollar's worth- of firewood. The price was gereed and accused paid the inan with a forged $10 bank note. He got in exchange $9 good money. and instructed that the firewood he delivered to No. 814 Nathan Road, Int toor. He then went away. The firewood was sent but the peanle win were delivering it could not find the address given. The firewood was taken back to the shop and Yung Mun then became suspicious of the bank- note. He took it to a money-changer, who declared it to be forged. He. then proceeded to look for accused but failed to find him.

The next day he and his fokis con- tinued the search and one of "them, who was present at the actual trans action the previous days, saw accused in another firewood shop in the same street. The accused had a bank-note in his hand, but'; whether it was forged one or not the Crown could not say, because when he was sub- $10 sequently searched a genuine note of the same bark was found on his person. The secured again bar- gained for a dolint's worth of fire- wood, but did not make any purchase as when he presented the bank-nots the proprietor informed him that he had no change.
