Church Schism To End Soon?

NEGRO SLAVERY' WAS CAUSE OF SPLIT 100 YEARS AGO

Evanston, Ill, Sept. 7.

A schism which nearly m century ago split the powerful American Methodist Episcopal church into warring Northern and Southern factions, will be healed by 1944 if a plan offered to church leaders here is suc- cessful.

14

A reunion of the two groups would make the Methodist Church the strongest prótesant organisation in the country with

a membership of about 7,000,000 persona,

The slavery issue precipitated the breach 91 years ago.

The general conference at Now York suspended Bishop James C. Androw in 1844 because he was n slave owner. A biter årgu. ment between Northern and Southern representatives ensued and the following year the Southern group called its own general con- ference at Louisville.

The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was organized at the First General conference nt Petersburgh, in 1846.

Numerous attempts to erase the split were made, the last in 1925. The most recent attempt failed, however, when a sufficient majority of the Southern annual conferences failed to vote in favour of the re union.

The race question was expected to be the most difficult hurdle at the Evanston conference,

Two Solutions

Two solutions were proposed:

1. That the United States be divided into jurisdictions and negroes be given a jurisdiction of their own, electing their own bishops.

2. That the negro aren be at- tached to their adjacent Northern jurisdictions-leaving the Southern jurisdictions entirely to whites.

Bishops elected in each jurisdic-

tion would be confirmed general conference Inter..
