Sky Dwarf Cannot Be Seen By Naked Eye
YET GRAVITATION WOULD FLATTEN
HUMANS
Mt. Wilson, Cal., Aug. 10.
A "sky dwarf" star with a gravity pull so powerful that it would flatten human be- lings as though they were run over by a steamroller. has been measured by astro- nomers of the Carnegie ob- servatory here.
The lille star, companion to the huge Sirius in the Southern sky, was found to be 85 magnitude by astronomers Joel Stebbing and Albert Whitford. It is 52 million million miles from the earth.
The two research men announe- ed that they were able to measure the "sky dwarf" by using special devices on the 100-inch Mt. Wilson telescope, the world's largest imagnifying instrument.
Although only three times large as the minor planet known a the earth, the "dwarf" in Ro Compact that its gravitational puil controls the orbit of the many times larger Sirius. The star's pull was computed as 35,000 times that of the earth's gravity.
if a human being were to come' within the range of the "dwarf's" gravity, he would collapse ant spread like water. A normal man
of 150-pounds would weigh 2.625 toth on the dwarf's" surface. -United Press,
