BRITAIN SEEKS ANSWER ON VITAL QUESTION

London, July 3.

It is reliably reported that the French feeling of sympathy with and faith in Great Britain is cooling,

in the first place because France was not informed in America's

advance of the British Government's intention of formulating a naval accord with Germany, and in the second place, because Paris was not informed of Mr. Anthony Eden's suggestions for the settlement of the Italo-Abyssinian dispute before they were made to Signor Mussolini in Rome.

The Anglo-French estrangement is expected to strengthen the French policy favouring Italian over- lordship in Abyssinia, and Britain, therefore, in order to placate France, reportedly intends to reaffirm her sympathy with the French standpoint that Europe's problems must be settled as an independent whole.

It is noteworthy that such a decision would mean that Britain would support the French demand that an aerial defence league would be negotiable only as a part of general armament and security agreements. This is diametrically opposed

to the German stand, Germany favours un air league without committing herself to an Eastern European security pact. a Danu- blan security pact, Austrian in- dependence agreement or limita- tion of land armaments scheme.

London, July 3.

The reference by Mr. Lloyd George, in a speech in London yesterday, to the British attitude regarding the abolition of submarines in the recent Anglo-German naval conversations were declared to be absolutely without foundation by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Bolton Eyres-Monsell, in the House of Commong to-day. The denial was received with loud cheers.

Mr. Lloyd George had stated that he had been told that Germany had offered to abolish submarines, but that Britain was not prepared to accept the offer. He added that he hoped the report was inaccurate.

In denying the report, Sir Bolton Eyres-Monaell said it was contrary to the plain facts,
