CHAPTER XVI
Millicent held her land close to her side, hoping she had concealed the key container which was pressed against her robe.
"Will you learn to keep out of my room!" she blazed with un indignation which did much to conceal her panic. "Is it going to be necessary for me to have a apring lock put on that door, or must I appeal to your mother to force you to show at least ordinary decency and respect to a woman?"
He laughed and said, "Oh, come off your high horse. You'd go down to a beach in a bathing suit with nothing more on than a bandana handkerchief, and

The smile faded from his face and he becamo instantly surly.
"I'll get out of here," he said, "when I get damn good and ready."
Then get ready now," he told him.
"I'm going to ask you a few ques- lons first."
was wrung from her lips.
The door from the hall crashoit Norman Hepp stood on the open. threshold.
He had no need to ask the meaning of what was taking place. The posi tions of the two people told him all too plainly: Millicent Graves, her body twisted, trying to take as much atrain as possible from her arm, while Robert Caise, standing over her gloatingly, his face flushed, was twisting the arm and deriving appar- ent pleasure from the torture.
"You dirty end)" Normun Happ said, striding across the room.
Calse whirled to face him. "You keep out of this," he said. "You damned upstart!"
Norman Happ placed his right hand on the shoulder of Cairo's cont. His fingers gripped the cloth.
"Wait a minute," Calso said, “be- fore you do anything rash. See what aho's got in her right hand and you won't be so chivalrous."
Caiso had relaxed his grip some- what, and Millicent swung her right palm in a slap against the side of his face.
"That's what I've got in my palm. you beast!" she said."
Calse cursed, jumped back, letting go his grip of her. He completely font control of himself, and swung his Ost at her chin.
Millicent flung up her hands in stinctively. The blow crashed through her guard, struck her on the side of the head. Then she heard the smack- ing impact of bunched knuckles against bone. She opened her eyes and stared dazedly at Robert Calso staggering backwards, while Norman Ilopp, standing with his feet planted wide apart, his jaw thrust belliger
"I'm not going to talk with you."ently forward, glowered at him.
Did you know that there'd been
a murder committed here last night?" Millicent narrowed her eyes, stood very straight, very erect and very dignified.
"I am not going to let you get away with such an intrusion," she said, "by making any startling statements. If you told me the whole family had been murdered, I wouldn't let you dodge the question we were discus. sing.
*What question?"
"Your right to coma Into iny room without knocking."
"I don't claim it's a right. I did
it because it's a matter of an emer gency."
"I tell you that I'm not going to allow you to distract my attention."
"You're suspected."
#
His eyes were boring steadily into hers. The police," he said, "are go- ing to suspect you. They're going to suspect everyone. You're going to be questioned by the police. They're going to ask you who you are, where you've been living, how long you're been living there, and a hundred other things. What are you going to tell) them 7
"What I'm going to tell them," sho said, "is hy business."
"You don't dare to tell them the truth."
"Why not 7"*
"Because they'll know that you're ihe girl wanted for Drimgold's mur
der."
She faced him and said, "I've heard just about enough of that from you, You've apparently been giving your- rolf a lot of pleasure doing a little Personally, amateur detective work.
I think that's gone just about far enough. Now get out of here."
"Listen," he told her. "I'm your be your friend that is, I want to friend, but you and I need to come You can't be to some understanding. high-hat with me. I just wanted to let you know that whether or not the police suspect you of the murder depends a lot on what I say. You'd better know which side of your bread has the batter."
"Menning, I suppose, that I shouldi fall in your arms,"
"You could do worse."
"What would your mother say?! "She wouldn't know."
"I take it then that you're not pro. posing matrimony"
"Don't be silly."
"I'm not," she said, "and what's more, I have no intention of being." "Someone." he told her, "stole my car last night."
"Indeed."
►
"They took the ignition keys from the car."
Then perhaps it wasn't the ear they were stealing, but the keys"
"No, they stole the car. It rap out of gas and whoever it was took the car kept the keys."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Caise, but I'm not interested in, you or your car."
"Well," he said, "a moment ago you were pulling something out of the pocket of your fur coat and

As he recoiled sho slapped him again and again. He grabbed at her arm; and as he did so she took advantage of the oppor tunity to toss the key container far into the interior of the closet,

"Get out," she said, "or I'll scream." He had caught her arm now. His face was suffused with emotion. "Damn you," he said, "I'll show, you whether you can do that and get away
"Get out of here!" Happ said. Caise caught at the foot of the bed to keep his balance..
I get out of here," he said, "when she tells me to, and not before. And if she tells me to, she knows what it's going to mean."
Millicent felt Norman Happ's eyes turn toward hers dubiously.
"Don't think she's one of those sweet, innocent ittle girls," Calen said. "She's got plenty to conceal. Sho
"Get out!" Happ tald,
"Not until she tells me to," Cnise anid.
By way of answer, Millicent walked to the door, stood with her hand on the knob, and said, "Get out."
"All right," Caise sneered. "I"! leave you with your little boy hero. You can figure out how much good It's going to do both of you."
"Trying to insinuate that you've got something on the girl! Happ naked.
"I've got plenty on her," Calne said, t'and when I leave here, I'm taking it with me."
"Tako thla with you, too," Happ said, and swung bis right foot.

"Perhaps," she teald.
"Something you'd be afraid to have come out?"
She wanted to lower her eyes, yot could not tear them from his. She know how a faithful dog feels when it has done wrong and is approaching Its master. Her knocs felt weak.
"Can you tell me what it is " he asked.
"No," she said in a low, weak voice, "My father," he said, "told me to come to you. He couldn't get away. Ho's talking with the ollscors. Ho said to remember that you had come hero from Seattle, that in Seattle you were working for an attorney named Irving Charles Bacholder."
She faced him and said, "But I won't in Seattle and I don't know any Irving Charles Bachelder."
"Nevertheless," he said, "that's what my father says you are to tell the pallee. They'll nak, you some. thing about where you've been."
"But suppose they should wire Mr. Bachelder if there is any such pers eon?"
"My father," he said, will take care,

But," she asked him, "should 'I lie to the police?"
He looked at her for a moment. "You'd better do as Father says,” hơ told her. "Father is nearly always right."
She wanted desperately to come to his arms, wanted to put her hands on hin shoulders, wanted to lay her head on his chest and sob.
Something of what was in her mind must have shown in her eyes. Ho stepped toward hor.
At that moment the door opened. Robert Caise stood on the threshold, With him was a man in plain clothes who, nevertheless, had the stamp of detective written on him, both in clothes and features.
