CHAPTER XII
The line in the cafotoria shuffled forward, past wells of bean and tomato soup, past trays of cabbage and macaroni and cheese and beef slow, on to the small, glittering mounds of red and gold gelatin, the prunes and solid-looking wedges of apple pie.
The heavy porcelain dishes chat- tered and voices buzzed-now rising and lowering in volume, broken in upan by shrill laughter or a sharp exclamation. It was lunch time for the day shift in the mill.
Gale Henderson, halted by the line in front, rested her tray against the steam table. She nodded and said, "Yes the tomato soup," to the woman across the counter, Bome one jogged Gale's elbow as the woman set the bowl on the tray and the thick red liquid splashed. Gale turned. She heard the voice of a girl in front;
"Suppose you heard about the fight last night 7"
"You mean Vogel and Phil Hender- son?" It was a different girl spenk- ing now.
Yeah. Know what started it?" "Ruby, I suppose.
1
"Sure. What all these guys see. in that dame-but I guess it was sume fight! Phil ought. to know better than to try to cut in on Ed Vogel-"
"Sny, I thought it was just the other way around!!"
The first girl shook her head know. ingly, "No, I've got the straight of it," she said. "Ülancho Ryna told nie and she used to go around with Ruby all the time. Blanche says it's the limit the way Ruby is always two-timing guys. Just the same, Phil ought to leave Vogel alone. Ed Vogel can lick any man in the mill. That's what my brother snys
The two girls had reached the end of the line and made their way toward a table Galo halted, holding hor tray. Colour flamed in her cheeks. She was angry at the girls, angry at Phil. What a way for him to be- have! No wonder ho'd left the house xo early that morning. Fighting with n brute like Ed Vogel, Över a girl like Ruby Grimth! That's who they meant, of course,
She wished she didn't have to sit
with anyone at lunch to-day. But sho did. There were no individual tables in the mill cafeteria. There was Josie Gridley at a table where there was a vacant place. Gale made her way toward it."
*
Jonio mald, "I'lo, Gale. Sure there's room for you, and pushed some dishes aside. "Well, tho went on, what
do you think of tho now boss?"
The new boss?" Joale nodded. "Brian Westmore," she explained. "The old man's son. They say he's going to work here now that is, if you can call it work, sit- ting in a swell offico like Thatcher's, giving orders and all that. That was him Thatcher was piloting around yesterday. Didn't you sea om 7
"Yes," Gole said, "I saw them, but what makes you think Brian Wost- mora's going to stay here? Maybo he's just home for a visit."
Josie's nod was negative and om- phatic. "No," who said, "Bill Keeley knows a fellow in the business offico and he said this fellow Bill knows, 1 mean that young Westmore's got a special office, right next to That- cher's. Gee, he's BWoll looking7 Don't you think so? Tall and dark and such swell clothes. They say ho's been everywhere-all round the world."
"And he paints pictures," the girl Across the table put in. "That's what he was doing in Paris, Painting pictures!"
7'1 bet that wasn't all he did,” her neighbour added knowingly. "I've seen it in the movies--the way they cut toone in Paris. Champagne and well parties and girls dressed up in feathers and not a siitch of anything else. I saw a movie fust last week where there was a fellow who was an artist
"What I want to know." Josie In- terrupted, "is why he came back to this place. Imagine guy with the money Brian Westmore's got, able to go anywhere he wants to and do any thing he pleases. Imagine coming to this place!"
There was a chorus of agreement. "Gee, I know what I'd do the glei across the table began, but nenin Jesie cut her short.
"Look," she said, pointing to the clock on the wall.. "Seven minutes and you've got to be back on the job. Wonder how long Mr. Brinn West- more gets for lunch. D'you suppose they cut his pay if he's a minute late?"
"Well, they'll cut yours," the other kir shoppet back. I wouldn't care how many new bosser we got if only
it wasn't so hat and close. Honcat,
Ing bell rang, "If only I knew what to do about Phil," who thought again. "If only I know how to help him!"
She was back at her place, bands ready, a full minute ahead of time. The warm, moist air pressed about her, Now the spindles were dancing again. The machines roared. Sixty women in blue dresses, hends and fingera moving as though they were machines, too, clamped on bobbins, twisted the thread, snapped them off. Human arms and machine....arma; human fingers and machine' fingers; up and down, up and down-
That was the afternoon Connie Bauman fainted. Gala didn't sco what happened. She didn't know anything about it until she heard Fisher, the foreman, saying some- thing loud voice, Galo turned and saw Connie the floor. Anothor girl was leaning over her and Fisher was bosido them.
"Here, you!" he called to Galo.) "Help us got her out of here!"
They had to carry her. Connie's oyes opened when they were in the corridor. She tried to speak but, though her lips moved, no sound came. They took her through a door marked, "Emergency," Into little room in which there was a couch.
B
A crowd of half a dozen had gather ed about the door. Someone said, "They ought to keep her head down. They ought to put water on her face." Another said, "My sister fainted oncem"
"Get back to your machines," Fisher ordered. "I'll take care of this

Gale, turning into the ball, almost walked into a tall young man' in a brown suit. It was Brian Westmore. "What's happened?" ko asked. "WAB it A11 accident-l anyone hurty"
Galo said, "A girl fainted. She's in there--"
She allpped past him then, hurry. Ing down the hall. "Wait a minuto!" Brian called. He took step after her, the girl apparently did not hear. She was out of sight in another in- stant, disappearing through a door from which came the grinding' roar of the machines.
Connie did not come back to work that afternoon. Voices buzzed in the wash room at quitting time. Some one said Connie'd been warned by n doctor that her lungs were infected.. it was her heurt. There were rumours Another mail, 'no, it wasn't her lungs;
that she'd been rushed to the hospital, that her brother's wife had come for her, that Connie had recovered com- pletely and walked home,

"It was bad," Gale agreed. "Worse than usual,"
Josie pushed her chair back. "I'll drop in and mention the fact to That- cher," she said anrenstiently. "Or Mr. Westmore. I know they'd be glad to do anything to make their drar employes happier!"
Josie arose and a moment later
Gale followed her. She joined the throng In the hall just as the warn

"Yes," Gole agreed, "it was worse than usual."
"Know what I think's the matter with Connie 7" the other went on.
"Want 7"
"I think she's starving herself, that's what I think. She doesn't buy any lunch, you know. Just brings something. All she find the other day was an apple-I know because I saw her eating it here in the wash room, | She said something about not being hungry and having had a big break fast, but I didn't believe a word of It. Connie lives with her brother and his wife and he ain't been workin', you know. Laid off a month ago. don't think they've got anything but Just what Connie makes-"
Gale nodded. She said, "Yes, I think that's what's the matter with Connie. She shouldn't do it. Sho won't be able to work if she doesn't

The other girl turned away. Gale. put on her coat and hat and went down the corridor. Outside she faced Brian Westmore. He was smiling and he said, "I thought if you were going down the street you might let j me walk along with you."
