THE crash of the British flying- Tork 8595, at San Filippe Superiore, a hamlet eight miles from Messina, with the loss of the entire crew of nine, was the grim! sequel to a series of misfortunes which have dogged the Pembroke Dock-Singapore flight.
Owing to engine trouble and in- fluenza the squadron was held up. at Napice and was already a fort- night behind its schedule.
This morning two of the ma- chines, K 8595 and K 3592, were ordered to proceed on their way and they left Naples for Malta at:
10 o'clock.
At noon the few villagers of San Filippo Superiore heard a machine zooming over their heads amid the clouds.
With a terrific noise it crashed into a spur of the 4,000ft, high Peloritana Mountain and burst immediately into flames.
The villagers tried to get near, but the flames were like an in- ferno, with sparks and smoke bursting from the machine,
They ran down the mountainside for assistance, and after a journey of two and a half hours returned with firemen and officluls on don- keys.
Other villagers gathered snow and threw it on the plane in an attempt to extinguish the fire.
