DARWINISM DEFENDED
BY SIR ARTHUR KEITH
PROOF OF EVOLUTION?
Sir Ambrose Fleming's attack on the Darwinian theory, previous- ly reported, was discussed by Sir Arthur Keith, the famous an thropologist, in an interview in the Hall of the Buckstone Browno. Research Farm, of which he is Mastor.
"My friend Big Ambrose Flem- ing is so gracious a person, and we are so much attached that I hesitate to set up against his opin- ions other views which I know to be the truth," was Sir Arthur's first remark, says a Daily Telegraph correspondent,
Bir Ambroso had said that the Darwinian theory "was the pro- duct of imagination"; that the Resurrection was one of the most certainly attested facts of history, and that consequently it certified all previous miracles.
Sir Arthur Keith, asked if wo have any serious proof of the evolution of modern man from an animal stock, replied, spanking slowly and deliberately: "Dar- win's proof of Evolution, announc ed in the 'Descent of Man' over: 60 years ago, was so conclusİVO that no blologist since has been able to overthrow it. It has head confirmed by every discovery made since which extends the antiquity of man.
ANTIQUITY OF MAN
"No doubt, in my various works, I have underestimated the age of man. My results have been on the conservative side. There is no doubt man goes back half a milllon, probably a million years. Man is no sudden or rapid growth.
"I'm afraid Sir Ambrose Flem- ing forgets the proof of antiquity In stone. Implements. Those are being found in every part of the world, and show man to be many hundreds of thousands of years old. He forgets, too, the various colours, of the human race-tho whites, blacks, browns, yellows. These have not become so diffier- ant In the last 6,000 years.
on
"Then what about Fossil Man? One of the greatest discoveries of Fossil Man ever made is now be Ing investigated here. The speci- mens were found in caves Mount Carmel in Palestine (euri- ously enough), and we hope soon to show where they lived and how they lived. They are certainly 100,000 years old.'
"Sir Ambrose asks," said the Interviewer, "why are astonishing powers and faculties found in man. and totally absent in the collateral animal, the ape7"
"He cannot answer that; neither can 1," Sir Arthur Keith replied. "I do not know. Why is a Sir Isaac Newton born in one family and an idiot in another? What light has Sir Ambrose to throw on that?

· "Man's evolving.
"Perhaps Sir Ambrose would profor me to use the word 'cren- tion' instead of 'evolution, but if I did it would not be the creation of Genesis, but the natural crea- tion that goes on and on in this world of ours:"
"NO RESTORATION OF LIFE
Sir Arthur_said he hesitated to discuss the question of the validity of the evidence in support of the Resurrection or of the truth of miracles. He could not agree with Sir Ambrose Fleming that the evidence was "overwhelming."

POSER FOR MUSEUM
GIFT FILM NOT TO BE SHOWN
CAN THE BAN BE
OVERCOME?
The British Museum Trustees have been placed in a quandary by conditions attached to one of the most recent gifts.
It is a film depicting the life of the Worora tribe, of North-West Australis, and has been presented by Mr. H. R. Balfour.
The tribe is one of the most primitive in the world. It lives as if it were In the Stone Age. The Alm shows native dances, rituals, ceremonics, and the rude arts and crafts of the aborigines. Its in- terest and value are unique.
The difficulty of the Muscum' Trustees, is to make full use of the i gift. The Australian Government regulations relating to Govern- mont "reserves"—the tribe' lives in ono of them-forbid the commercial use of any film taken in a "reserve."
That rules out the possibility of the film being shown to the public on payment of a small admission charge, the profits to go to the purchase of new Muscum acquisl- tione,
Then the question arises whether the dlm could very well be shown in the Museum, even if a suitablo room is found in which to project
it,
It is possible that the film may be shown in some hall outside the Museum, and that only scientific audiences will have the advantage of seeing it.
At present it lles in an unopened cylinder,
SOME RECENT ACQUISITIONS. Another curious acquisition, on- nounced by the Trustees recently was a couple of carved wooden ceremonial staves from the Toba were used in rain-making cere Battaks of Sumatra. These staves monies, at which the natives dance round them to the accompaniment of weird cries..
A'Roman head of marble, which may be a portrait of the Emperor Vespasian, who lived in the first century A.D., has been found near Colchester, and is BOW at the Museum.

Other antiquities recently quired include nine English gold coins, unique varieties of Edward III.'s coinage, and a London Unite. of Charles II, from punches used for Aberyswyth.
The Christy Trustees have pre- sented 'n amall but select series of early Mayan potteries and stone objects from Salvador, Costa Rica, and the west coast of Guatemala.
The Herbert Spencer Trustees have presented, from the philo sopher's library, a number of books which all gaps in the Museum's collection.
The Earl of Romney has deposit- ed on loan his papers of the Wyatt family, some of which bear on the lives of the poet and his son, the "Sir Ambrose Fleming is par-conspirator, and notably on the ticularly fortunate in being able relations of the former with Anne to believe in those miracles," he Boleyn, which formed part of the "We presume the law of gravity said.
