NOTES FROM THE THEATRES
There has not been, a problem in make-up that has yet stumped a Hollywood make-up artist. Such ex- amples-sis Loretta Young as a Chiness girl in "The Hatches, Man," Barbara' Stanwyck as an old woman in "So Big," and numerous others have all heen counted in the day's work of thoso studio artists. The latest job was to make a prize-fighter of James Cagney for sequences in his current Warner Bros. picture, "Winner Tako All," which opens to-morrow at the Alhambra. When Director Roy Del Ruth consulted the make-up man on this tank, the latter merely answered Dol Ruth's anxiety with a nonchalant nod.of the head.. "Just let me have Cagney for half an hour and I'll see what I can do," he said. The cauli flower car was an easy matter. Cag- noy's car was made into an exact replica with the sld of putty. But the broken, flattened nose Was different mattor. Adding putty would enly make it largor; and the iden was to make it smaller and flattor, The solution came through a little dovico which Cagney was already | maing. A thin strip of cotton batting placed between his upper lip and bis gums gavo him an added look of pugnacity and allowed an inflection in his voice which was in keeping with his role. By merely making this wad of cotton large enough, the upper lip was protruded forward, thus giving the appearance of the nose being closer to his face. Added to this flattened appearance, adhesive tape gave it that twisted appearance and the trick was done.
"Catherine The Great"
They said Alexander Korda must be mad, "they" being almost every. body connected with films when ne set out to film Henry VIII's private Hife: history on the screen had always been
inmal failure. But the Laughlon picture made the who.o world take notice. They were sure he started on another historical film, "Catherine the Great", showing at the King's Theatre to-day, a story without the salt of Henry's humour. And again Korda has the laugh. "Catherine" is undoubtedly great. greater even than its predecessor. If for no other reason, it must be seen by everybody for Elizabeth Berg-. ner's debut in British pleturis. Not one of the superlativo adjectives that have been fastened Mias Borgner has been misplaced. She is simply superb; probably the world's mont consummate actress. Douglas Fair banks, Jr., playing Czar Peter 11 to Bergner's Catherine, has his most exacting rolo to date and plays it brilliantly. The story traces Cather ino's summons to the Russian Court by the Empress Elizabeth (Flora Robson); her marriage to
the un- balanced Peter; his infidelitles; his crucity when he becomes Czar; and the revolution in which Catherine is made ruler and Feter is killed. The neting throughout is so admirable, and the atmosphere so convincing, that this allee of 18th century history becomes entertainment par excellence. "George White's Scandals"
Fox Film has scooped the enter tainment world again to give-you the first motion picture production of the one and only "George White's Scan- dals showing at the Oriental Theatre on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. With the unlimited scope afforded by mation picture technique, this new edition of the famous show will be bigger, better, more spectacular, moru fully entertaining than any of the production that have thus far made the name of George White an out- atanding one in the amusement universe. It is a $5-60 musical ex- travaganza brought to the country's vast motion picture, audience at libe Theatre prices. The cast is one of the most outstanding over nasembled for imilar production. Hended, by Ruby Vallee and Jimmy Durante, it presents Allee Faye, who won screen stardom after only three days in Hollywood; Adrienne Ames, one of the screen's most beautiful netres- sex; Clin Edwards, the "Ukulele Ike" of thentrient and radio fame, Gregory Ratoff, master of comb dinfect; Dixie Dunbar, Gertrude Michael, and the famed George White. himself.
