mont building, are now being sold with a mixed lot of angols and. gargoyles at the bargain rate of 12 apiece. Several statues of the King's forebears have been bought by Americans. Others have been sent to various parts of

tho British Empire.

Most of the statuary from the Houses of Parliament is now looking considerably the worse for wear as a result of nearly a century's exposure to the London atmosphere. In a number of instances the figures aro without noses or cars. Others have had sections of beards chipped off by the parliamentary pigeons,

Those atatuos are all being re- moved to a yard underneath the Victoria Tower for storage until they are sold. Many were totten Ing in a precarious condition over the street before they wore re- moved by the repair gangs.

The restoration work

on the Houses of Parliament has already taken more than seven years and will probably not be completed for another eight or nine years. It is estimated that the total cost of the work will be at least £700,000.-United Press.

CANTON'S TAX PROBLEMS

LIGHTENING BURDEN OF THE POOR'

(Our Own Correspondent)

Canton, Aug. 18. Recent abolition of numerous minor taxes, have entailed a ́loss of provincial revenues to the extent of $6,300,000 a year, and cancellation of other minor taxes will mean an additional loss of $1,600,000 a year. It was learned last night.

The cancellation of petly mis- cellaneous taxos ia intended to

lighten the burden, of the poor people in accordance with the Three-Year Plan. These taxes were collected throughout some rinets districts in Kwangtong.

At the same time, the Pro- vincial Department of Finance has 'deelded to appropriate $6,000,000 for the relief and promotion of farming. A detailed plan.

be

ing formed on how best to spend the money for the peasant class, ns it is recognised that Kwang- tung is primarily an agricultural province.

Reller in farming includes the silk industry, which is one of the leading enterprises of Kwang- General Chan Chai-toor, who is responsible for this mea- sure, takes cognizance of the fast that the prosperity of Kwangtung depends upon the purchasing power of the farmers, who con- stitutes DO per cent. of the 30,000,- 000 population.

As the Kwangtung Government would be losing money by the abolition of the levies referred to, now taxes are being collected to make up the deficit, including one en matches. The 20 per cent. surcharge on nine taxes frat bvied to stabilize the provincial banknotes, is being retained.

A special protective tax, which is really an additional import tariff, is to be collected shortly, although it is still being studied. by the various tax burenux.
