PSYCHOLOGY OF PACIFISM

diet of it in their nowspacts." We have heard that sort of thingi before from other clover ccamo- polites whose magniloquence, how- ever, has not prevented England from remaining English, France French, Germany German, and so
ou.
Moreover, not only must nu tionality be oliminated, but the whole mentality of mankind must bo completely changed before the ideal of a world permanently at praco can be reallsod: Man's present position on this planet is the Toward of

struggle extending over millions of yours, beginning with the deter mination to survive in a life whore "Eat or be eaten" was the only law. The abolition of War," Mr. IT. G. Wells admits, "if it enn be brought about, will be a reversal not only of the general method of human life hitherto, but of the general method of nature the method that la, of conflict and sur- visal." And, if the millennium of the pacifists to be finally acheived, would not a "deadly lat lessness, as William Jamos sug- over most men's arnations of the future? In such a stagnant afternoon of a world where would be the zest or Interest?" And in the end the pacifist's world-state might re- somble a termite's nest in which Individuality has been completely crushed out and intelligence re- duced to blind instinct. Beware of the ethics of the insect-minded!
If Dr. Barnes and his followera had their way, the British Empire would soon cease to exist. The Invasion and eventual conquest of Australia and New Zealand, so much richer in natural resources than Japan, by hordes of hungry Asiatic soldiers would be inevit- n,able and immediate. Our other (possessions beyond the seas would be seized, and it would profit un not at all if foreign peoples quarrelled and fought over the the loot. British division of citizenship, at present a guarantee of safety all over the world, would become a serious liability. The Briton abroad would be the most despised of undesirable allens. Perhaps Grent Britain itself.
though thought of as a "pirates lafr" by the predatory, might cscape conquest. But we should be compelled to buy anything and everything the foreigner chose to sell us, and, in the end, all our factories would have to close down. We should have nothing to buy food with, and should starve to death by the million.
But this paclism, which is the "défcatiem" of the war years under a new style, is only a tem- porary illusion.. As in the past, British common sense will once more prevail, I hope and believe, and it will be seen that the best guarantee of "peace in our timo" is a strong and adequately armed British Empire, able to save-itself. by Its energy and the world by its example.
