THE HONGKONG

DEPARTING CONSUL

HONOURED

TRIBUTE PAID TO M1: '

·DE-LA- PRADE

A happy function took place in the Jacobean. Room of the Hong- kong Hotel yesterday afternoon, when a farewell reception was hold in honour of the departing French Consul-General, M. Georges Dufauro de la Prade, who has been transferred to Milan Italy. Organised by M. M.J.E. Montargis, and Madame Montargis, the reception was in the nature of a warm demonstration of the high rogard in which M. de la Prade was hold by the community in general. At this vin d'adiou, as It la termed, there were present in addition to members of his Imme- diate cotorie à representative gathering of friends, headed by Sir Thomas and Lady Southorn, Hon. Sir Wiliam Shenton and Sir William Hornell.

Addressing the gathering," M. Montargis said that the position. he owed to himself as being "al- most a doyen" of the French com- munity by virtue of long ro- sidence, had encouraged him to venture on a apcoch of whose literary shortcomings he was ful- ly sensible, but which lacked nothing in the sincerity of the sentiments which It sought to 'ex-

prees.

Andéo Maurois in his memoirs of Edward VII and his times, had related how. a indy friend of one of His Majesty's pears had com- plained to the poor after sitting through one of his speeclics that she was unable to hear it on ac- count of the yawns with which ho. punctuated it; and was thon told by the peer that it was as well as she would have yawned more had she heard it. (Laughter).

He would not presume to at tempt a pompous delivery, ho sald.

True Proverb.

It was said of Frenchman that they liked changes and variations, That might be so, but it would be overstating the position. They were happy and satisfied that M. de la Prade was going to a higher position, but it meant that he would be leaving them. A pro- verb has it that to say good-bye was to die a little. That proverb was true to-day for those who re- mained behind and saw M. de la Prade separated from them.

In M. de la Prado, he said, they had found in full measure an omelent official, discerning judge; a man of lettors, a genuine friend, and, an honest man in the full sense of the word An of icial who was always found ready to give all the information at his disposal, useful and helpful in the solving of dificulties; a judge in a Consular Court at Shanghal who during his term of offico had evinced all the qualities of good judge; a man of letters whose. knowledge was extensive and stimulating; and who had found a place for a local French library for wandering Frenchman yearn- ing for the literature that was. their pride. He had indeed given to his official position a lustre and. prestige seldom known, embodying that spirit of French courtesy to which La Bruyere had alluded the courtesy that makes other people antisfied with us and with themselves, said M. Montargis.

qualities, and they were truly thankful. He would be leaving behind him name worthy of the best in official circles, and a gap It would be vary. hard to fill. Tköy would also miss the lady who was the charming and devoted wife.. of the Consul-General. Truly the moralist was right who said that much of our success in life was duo to our wives, and for Madame do la Prado they had the warmest regard, and to hor they now has- tened to convey their good wishes, M: Montargis declarad.

It might be that their children would one day hear the name of do la Prado reappearing in the Far East. They had heard that his oldest son had passed brilliant- ly in his studies and it might bel that he would follow the same carser. To be a good servant of his country, he had only to follow the example act by his father and by the traditions of his family, the speaker went on.

He then called upon the gather Ing to join in a toast to the def parting Consul-General, coupling with it a wish for the boat one could wish for a dear friend and his family (Applause),,...

M. de la Prade was presented with a souvenir in the name of the local French community.

Sir Thomas' Tribute.

Sir Thomas Southern said: Oni behalf of the British community of Hongkong I should like to add one or two words to the very aloquent eulogium given by M. Montargia. The British com- munity in Hongkong is losing in M. Dufauro de la Prado a very dear friend. Socially, WO all know him in the community. His ready wit, his cheerful smile, his happy disposition which ho car ries with him to ivery party, as- sist in all negotiations, however, sarions, however difficult, and have. all gone to make a place in Hong- kong which will be very difficult to fill when he leaves us.

It was only a few weeks ago we had lost a much loved official from the Colony, and now we are losing another. Mr. de la Prado la one who is much honoured In the community, one whom we are nil sorry to lose, and one for whom we wish every success in his now sphere of activity. We know he will carry with him a rich memory of this place. We know that he is cortaluly Sorry in leaving (Continued on Page 13),
