Ho advanced yet another theory that the tearing of the plates, due to their having been considerably weakened by corrosion may have caused the initial spark from which the subsequent clanster developed.

It was stated that Government has been approached on the subject of rebuilding the gasometer.

"The evidence heard yesterday con- thued to be of a technical nature. Mr. W. A. Butterfield, who wis ro- called, agreeing that there was every possibility of structural distortion having occurred, through corrosion and wastage.

There are reasons to support the theory that the mpidity of the descend of the inner lift would be checked be- fore the "king" post met the central pler. There may have been cumpression of the air within the holder as the upper tier, with its Bide sheets, was submerged in the water tank. In any case, the deforma- tion of the upper and of the vertical joist is not such as would be caused by Junding heavily on the landing blocks. Had the "king" post land heavily on the central pier, the main tension rods would transmit the load to the gussets and che tendency would he to bend the upper onda of the Vertical Joista outwards instead of lowards as was caused.
