MR. J. RUSSELL'S LECTURE AT THEOSOPHICAL MEETING

Mr. John Russell, Presidential Agent for China of the Thoonophical Society, was the speaker at Thursday evening's meeting held by the Manuk Lodge. Hi Bubject was "The Known and the Unknown" and he began by saying hat these two apparently. contrasting Ideas are but two aspects of life, each in turn coming, uppermost in our struggle for a clearer understanding.

What do we know, out of all the great field of the Unknown? The early meetings of thin Lodge · were based on that question when Dir. Malcolm Manuk with a small follow. ing of enthusiasts founded and established the work here, the work of the exploration of the. Unknown. A little more is taken from the Unknown, and added to the Known. But the great Unknown atlit renmina to be explored, and parcera are constantly needed to lead further Into its depths.

Such a scene as the moon rising over the waters of the ocean. the grandeur, of luminated space, gives us an idon of the vastness of the Unknown contrasted with the littl that we know. And because of this vest Unknown creative works bugin. Cathedrals and temples are built because God is unknown. The force of the Unknown stimulates creative power, and Inspires such a genius ns Milton to write a "Paradise Lest". It is not what we know that creates, but the learning of what is unknown. We speculate on the Unknown, and ret up for ourselves a standard which we may try to force on others, not realising that the value is not in the finished building but in the aet of building.

The spenker went on to speak of the search for Truth, saying that by

using th. phrase, which may be called a poetical expression of an only partially realiood idea behind our conciousness, wo often appeur wiser than we really are. We should stop and ask ourselves what it ta wo are searching for, what we stop to find. There are deep momenta which come out of the Unknown, when we realise that we are treading on unfamiliar ground. These help us to understand that the real object of life a happidess, and when wo try to visualize this inner happiness in terms of everyday life We may experience a glow rising from the heart to the lips, a glimmer of sun- shing In unknown depths of the soul, awakening the spark intent there in us nii.

Let us look at the smile of a child and realise the happiness it can bring to all who come in contact with it. Jesus said of sech is the kingdom of heaven" and if we can but as little children allow the beauties of nature to penetrate to our hearts and glow in our eyes then life will be as beautiful as the moonlight rising over the water, making one feel Inexpressibly that it is good to be alive. But of what use fa this un- less we can pass it on to others who have not yet achieved this realian- tlon? Thus the power of the Un- know influences

all to 转门 through life more happily in mutual Barvice, it brings a ray of sunshine which we can reflect into the lives of others, for we are all parts of God's great Plan, Atting Into the mosaic of his workmanship, and each has a tremendous part to play in this wonderful Universe of the Known and the Unknown-Contribut, cd.
