CINEMA SCREENINGS

NOTES SUPPLIED BY

THE THEATRES

All the glamour, colour and thril's of the prize ring are realistically un display in "The Prizefighter, and the Lady, the new Motro-Goldwyn-Mayer flra showing at the Quoɔn's Theatre.: Max Baer, who is paired with Myrna Loy in the new picture, proves him- self as great a lover as ho is a fighter and, according to reports, threatens to overthrow the standard movie meaning of the word "romantic." Tall, the and handsome, Baer'a stature conjures up montal Images of clean-limbed Greek gods and Socratic athletle students. Against the background of thudding flata and the barking guns of Willie Ryan's gang of racketeers, W. S. Van Dyke, the director, has woven a beautiful, sensitive, fragile love story. Myrna Loy gives a gripping performance as Belle, night-club hostess who falls in lava with Steve Morgan (Max Baer), protects him from her ex-sweetheart, the gangster Ryan, and Impels. him to famo and the championship match.) Otto Kruger plays Ryan with all the polish and anothness expected from this dean of stage actors, recently drafted to Hollywood and the M-G-M studioa. As the booze-ridden "Pro- fessor," Waiter Huston given what, this reviewer ansidors one of the best performances of the great character Ector's career. It is a perfect, rola for Huston that of an old fight mana- ger who rehabilitates his own charac- ter in the interest of grooming fr the championship fight the young man he discovers working in a barroom. As the referee of the big match, Jack Dempsey reveals nil the great charm and ability that are characteristically his. He is an excellent actor, this Jack Dempacy.

"Doctor Bull"

Marion Nixon has one of the fes- tured roles in "Doctor Bull". Wil Rogers' latest picture for Fox Film, coming on Sunday to the King's Theatre. This makes the third pic ture in just about as many monthe in which Miss Nixon has had an im portant role. The other two wern Pilgrimage" and "Best of Enemies," a fact that accounts for her being one of the busiest actresses in the Alm colony. The supporting cast In "Doctor Bull", which is the screen adaptation of James Gould. Cozzens' important novel "The Last Adam", includes Vera Allen, Ralph Morgan. Louise Dresser, Rochelle Hudson, Andy Devine and Barton Churchil. John Ford directed, from the adap- tation by Paul Green, Pulitzer win- nor of two or three seasons agữ.

"Ladies They Talk About" Preston S. Foster after months of playing criminal charactors and arch villain roles has his first sympathet.e part playing opposite Barbara Slan- wyck in "Ladies they Talk About," a picture which comes to the Alhambra Theatre fcum the Warner Bros. studie. Preston was a crook In "I'm: A Fugitivo from a Chain Gang" o killer in "The Last Mile" and a mon- ster in "Doctor X". In other picturza ho has had more cr less evil or heavy parts, but in "Ladies They Taik About," he becomes a two fisted, high powered evangelist who works among women criminals, one of whom he falls for. At least ho become in- fatuated with Miss Stanwyck, a nri- poner at San Quentin, and a bank bandit of sorts, although a mighty attractive one. Preston exp:unds re- ligion at a tabernacls, conducts a mis alon, and in the course of events turns Mize Stanwyck into the path o righteousness. Foster says that his parents plotted a theol:gical career for hira fa his youth, but admits that this is the nearest he has come to ful-j filling their ambitions-for him. The story is intensely dramatic in ita port- rayal of prison life with the glamour of a romance between woman pri- soner and the evangelist. Others in the cast include Lyl; Talbot, Dorothy Burgess, Lillian Roth, Maude Eburne, Harold Huber and Ruth Donnelly.
