"NO OUTSTANDING GRIFFIN YET"-CAPTAIN FOSTER

FANLING PESSIMISTS

PROVED WRONG

NEW YEAR'S MEET SHOWS THAT N.H. RULES HAVE COME TO STAY.

SUCCESSFUL SEASON PREDICTED

(By "Capt: Foster")

Not so long ago I was told that a rather dull racing Season at Fanling was anticipated as prospects were far from bright due, primarily, to the discontinuance of races confined to the flat, and also to the very drastic cut in Stakes which would have the effect of diminishing the size of the "fields" and that, in consequence of a some- what unattractive programme, the attendance of specta- tors would show a considerable falling off.

These were apparently the considered views of a number of Fanling enthusaists and they also went so far as to deplore the large sums of money expended during the fast two years on improvements in drainage, levelling and practically re-turfing the Steeplechase course, which had previously been very hard and bumpy, besides erecting more accommodation for stabling etc.

The outlook, as depicted, was gertainly far from encouraging and

did appear that all the labour, time and money spent over a period 4 ton years or more to make Fan ting a rendezvous for all keon riding men would have been in vain.

BEST TRAINING TIME DOES NOT NECESSARILY ENSURE DERBY WINNER

MORE and more intensive is becoming the training work of the Subscription griffins and Australian ponies at the Happy Valley racecourse these days, for the opening of the new season is not far away, and with it the Derby, Champions and other classics.

Fast times at this stage of necessarily training do not

mean that the "Derby" Is in one's packet. Questions are now being asked in the shape of gallops and, until all ponies have replied, It will be time enough to go into the merits or demerits of the claims for clastic honours, nay two to three weeks before the Meeting.
