at a six club contract, a few play-Hamburg ing the hand at five clubs doubled | Harbin and redoubled. Only three pairs Honkong arrived at a apade contract, which. it is interesting to note, le the only rontract that can be made.

The question Is-is the hund strong enough to be opened with an original forcing bld, and if n forcing bid in to be made, should two or three forcing bid be used? Remember, an original three bid in the Sima system states that there is game in the suit first named and that partner is to name his high- cat ace.

It seems that, if the ace of hearts could be located, there should be a slam in the hand. If an original bid of three clubs is made and and partner responds with three hearts, showing the ace of hearts, six clubs seem assured, and possibly

seven.

On the other hand, some players | contend that there is no definite way to tell whether the band should be played at elbs or spades and therefore the hand should be open-) ed with a two bld.. However, I am not-inclined-to-favour the-shading- of the original two or three bid.

My partner, Sir Derrick J, Wern. her, president of the American Bridge Lengue, and sitting in the South, opened the contracting with one club. West passed, as did I in the North East was kind enough to keep the bidding open with one heart, South then bid two spades and I responded with two no trump,

South's next bid was four clubs and I was forced to make some re- sponse. I decided that a four spade' contract was one trick less than five clubs, and did not feel that either could be made, so my re- sponse was four spades, which East doubled.

The ten of hearts is opened and won by East with the queen. The
