Ile is a big man with a fat stomach, graying light hair, pale blue eyes that are cold and cat. culating at one time, warm and merry when he looks at his children. He looks like a success- ful Jewish cloak-and-suit mer- chant, shakes hands like a West- ern cowboy, talks English with a London West-end Jewish accent. wears you out, with his dynamle energy, and can out-argne anybody on earth.

He has been criticized by bigoted, orthodox Bolshevika because he has two dress sulis and both a black alk and a white pique evening Lie, not to mention long-tailed evening clothes, striped gray trousers and cutaway and a dinner jacket. He even wears them in Moscow, when meeting foreign diplomats, though Stalin and other high-ups stick to their workingmen's clothes.

He does not wear a formidable Russian beard, he doesn't even have moustiche. His glasses have horned rims that are "made in Amerien" and his formal clothes are made on Bond Street. In spite of these outfits for formal deca- sions, however, Litvinoff on ordin- ary work-daya usually looks as if he slept in his clothes.

Criticism doesn't bother Litvin- off: He always has met with it. He knows that he has a longer and better record for sticking to Bolah- evik ideals than practically anyone in Russia. He is, in fact, one of the "Old Bolshevika," a title, re- served for the small group which Included Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin and others lucky enough to have been in on the 1905 revolution.

Litvinaff was born in Bielostok in 1876, when that part of Poland was Russia. His real name, Wal-

ch, apparently has never been used by him. When he was 17 he was exiled 10 Siberia for anti- Czarist activities. He went to Switzerland and continued under- cover work for the revolutionists. was held for smureling in the arms used in the 1906 Revolution.
