HEROIC BAND OF MARTYRS

X-RAY PIONEER STILL ON DUTY

One day, perhaps, a civic V.C. will be instituted for the quiet and unspectacular heroes of medical Belenco. It will have to come soon If all the X-ray martyrs are not to receive their decorations post- humouslyN AMATER.

Ernest Harnack, who was the pioneer of the X-ray department at the London. Hospital when the healing value of the rays was dis- covered in 1896, is still alive-but living in retirement minus both „handa and wrists.

Two of his colleagues, Reginald Blackall and E. E. Wilson, died of X-ray cancer. B ENG

'SUFFERED AGONY, S

His chest la pitted with X-ray' cancora, his hands are terribly damaged, and has, suffered untold agony during 40 applications of radium. But nothing would induce him to leave his post at the hospital, though he loft off X-ray work in June 1924.

Above all, nothing will persuade. him that he is a hero. Ho hates the word.

"We know there were some dangers in the rays when I first- started,” he said, "but the hospital was poor. It could not afford to give proper protection, even if we had been certain of the method. Patients came, and we had to get on with the work and take the risk. "When I first started I was shown damaged Angers of opera- tóre as a warning to keep my own out of the way. Later, of course, we found that leaden gloves and glass which contained a percentage of lead gave the necessary protec tion.

MAN WITH TİN-TACKS.

Mr. Suggars noted as X-ray operator for 28 years--probably longer than any other man-and he dealt with, an average of about 4,000 cases a year over the period.

If you ask him for stories of his sufferings he will put you off with humorous tit-bits of his experien- · ces at the hospital.

!

No man has a greater fund of X-ray stories-particularly of the many patients who have reposed for a few moments on the couch while a radiograph was being taken and got up declaring that they felt much better.

He will laugh heartily about the man who coughed up some tin- tacks while he was being X-rayed, and was loud in praise of the mysterious lamp, but of his own martyrdom he will tell you nothing.

A very gallant gentleman!.
