If games and slams were bid on- when they could. bo mado against the best defence, contract would lose much of its thrill. A player who never bids more than the cards guarantee is far too

conservative, for he fails to allow for the human element. Good do fence is difficult, and the most skilful opponents sometimes fall short of perfection.

Probably the most interesting hands in the game are those in which the declarer has overbid slightly, and requires just a little help from his opponents to make the contract. Here wo find a true. battle of wite, with the opponents trying to discover the perfect de- ence which will beat the contract, and the declarer doing his best to conceal it from them.

The Bidding

To-day's hand was played in a rubber game, with North and South vulnerable. East and West not vulnerable. South opened with one heart, West passed, and North bid one opade, preferring to make A one-over-one, force rather than to nasist the hearts immediately. East bid two diamonds, South two hearts and North four hearts, which closed the bidding.

The Play

West opened with. the right of diamonds in response to his part- ner's bid, and East won with the king. South unhesitatingly played the nine of diamonds to the first trick, carefully concealing the three. The eight was presumably

West's highest diamond, so the ed- clarer knew that East' could im- mediately mark him (South) with the queen and nine. To play the three at this point would expose the fact that he held at least three diamonds.

East followed with the ace of diamonds, on which South played _the_queen_and_West_the_six, and this gave East a dimeult guess. The fall of the cards indicated. that South had no more diamonds, and that West held the missing three spot, for if he held 8.6,3 ori- ginally he would play them in that order. A careless Enat player might have led his singleton spade, hoping West would have the ace and return the suit for a ruff,

However, moment's thought about the bidding would make it clear that South must hold the ace of spades and five practically solld hearts, for otherwise he could not have opened the bidding and then re-bid his heart sult. In that case the only trick remaining for East aud West would be the king of clubs, and that would not be suf ficfent to defeat the contract.

There also existed the faint pos- Ability that South had false-card- ed in the diamond suit, and West'a singleton heart was an honour that could over-ruff. dummy. West grasped at this possibility like a drowning man at a straw. n proved to be the actual altuation. He was later able to make his king of clubs, thereby defeating the con- tract one trick.
