HYDE-LAY SHOWS INITIATIVE

(By "Veritas")

A Hyde-Lay, playing the finest bowls of his career, was yesterday crowned the new lawn bowls champion of the Colony, when he beat R. F: Luz, a former holder of the title, by 21 shots to 15: in 20 heads.

It was not a brilliant exhibition of the game in the sense that the players would take each other out of shot wood with perfect de- liveries, but Hyde-Lay did main- tain a sufficiently high standard of accuracy, combined with skill and tactics, which not only earned him a meritorious success, but held the keen interest of the big crowd of spectators.

the forehand draw But he ignored the obvious, bowled forehand and was narrow.

Luz made the tremendous error practically throughout the game of allowing Hyde-Lay to retain open draws on the fore- hond. The winner carly on revented that this was his strong suit, and that if blocked, would be very unlikely to enjoy the Hame success on his backhand.

This was another Illustration of Head the somewhat casual way in which Luz played his game. He appeared to forget that the earlier henda Indicated very clearly that his woods demanded a lot of green. Consequently when he came to the short head he was narrow with three woods. Neither did the fact that Hyde-Lay scored all four ahots on the forehand encourage Luz to take greater precautions.

Luz, himself a powerful back hand bowler appeared to become oblivious to tactics in his deavour to find the green and strength.
