An immense crowd, follow- ing for over two hours with breathless interest and uncon- cealed excitement one of the most thrilling and spectacular games of tennis ever seen, and breaking out into cheering which lasted five minutes was the enthralling scene on the Centro Court at Wimbledon yesterday, when Jack Craw- ford, the Australian, won the Men's Singles Championship from H. Ellsworth Vines, the tall Californian.

By this victory, Crawford realised. a promise which he had given from the moment he began the present European tour, and it will go down in posterity as one of the finest achievements of Wimble- don, for the success was gained at the expense of a world cham- pion playing at the height of his form. The scores in Crawford's

favour were:

4-6, 11-9, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. The match was really decided In the second set. Vines had wor the first and needed only the second virtually to make himself safe for the retention of the title. It was in the second set that Crawford rose to a brilliance In stroke play and tactics which nonplussed the American. le mastered Vines's service and re- turned the fiercest drives with interest and greater accuracy.

Essex too conceded eight points, whilst Glamorgan gave Notts n real fright lending by 180 on the first knock.

London, July 7. Two of Grent Britain's repre- sentatives scored wins at the British Athletic Championships at the White City to-day.

In the two miles walk, Cooper of Britain, hohler of the championship, retained the title covering the dis- tance in 13 minutes 39 4-5 seconds. Holden of Britain carried off the six miles championship, winning in 30 minutes, 32 1-5 secnnda .

The Marathon went to Robertson of Scotland. Robertson was the holder and his time was two hours, 43 minutes 12 1-5 seconds.
