A lake three foot deep was formed on Yangtzepoo Road, Shanghai when a main water pipe broke, and the resulting flood, at 75 pounds pressure per inch, dug a tremendous hole in the street. The picture at the left shows the broken section of pipe-large enough for the policeman to crawl through-and the plece cracked off. It is one inch thick and hard for even three men to lift, which shows the terrific water pressure. The picture on the right gives an idea of the hole blasted in the road. The perflous electric cables are on the left of the hole while a gas main is on the right, next to the water main.
