Young Wife Leaps From A Liner
PASSENGERS SEE
SALOON DRAMA
Nice, May, 15. After a quarrel with her husband, a young wife throw herself over- board from the now Italian luxury liner, the Conte di Savoia, late last night..
A tensely dramatic scene had taken place in the brilliantly-lit din- ing saloon. It was the last night of the voyage from New York, the passengers being duo to disem- bark to-day at Villefranche, and later at Genon.
Suddenly angry voices rang out, and a woman screamed. The actors in the drama were a young Italian woman and her husband, who had booked second, class passages Italy.

SUDDEN HUSH. There was a sudden hush in the vast aaloon. Then the woman, her eyes flashing, her checks, blanched, rose swiftly to her feet and ras from the dining room, knocking over glasses and flower vases in her
mad dash.
Passengers, led by the husband, ran after the young wife up, the brood stairway. Then, with one despairing ery, she climbered 011 to the railings of the promenade deck and cast herself into the sea.
Her cries still rang out as the great liner, which had been travel-
ling at full speed, came slowly to
rest. Life-belts had been thrown overboard, while the turbines churned madly in reverse.

The light of the liner wero trained over the waste of water, but there was nothing to be Boats were lowered, and for three hours they circled round in a vain search.

LABOUR PARTY.

GROWING CLEAVAGE: PLEA FOR UNITY.
Trouble is browing in the Labour movement between the Trade Union leaders and the theoretical Bocta- illsta.
The newly-formed Sociallat League, of which Mr. E. F. Wise is chairman, has been putting for ward a programme which, in the opinion of most Trade Union lead- ers, is one of "political impossibl- lism.”
It may all be idealistic, it is said, but it is not practical, and it is calculated to drive away, support from the real Labour' movement, which in essence is far away from the. Socialism advocated by tho leaders of this new movement.
In one of the Labour organs, Mr. Ernest Bevin, the strong man of the T.U,C.. has been writing a ser- fes of articles on unemployment..
These articles are advocating any- thing but the Socialism of the Wises and the Crippses and tho Coles. They are not much Socialism as social reform of the jold Radieal type. Mry Bovin wanta
action.
"We want no more Royal Com- missions or Committees." he states this week. "Action is needed, and needed speedily." His theory is benefit people, to get something done that
will
THEORISTS' VISION. The Socialist theorists, on the other hand, have, issued a pro- gramme through a series of pam-. phlets, which mean at least seven major amendments to the Constitu tion.
It is not too much to say that this programme is alarming many of the Trade Union leaders. Thoy do not propose to be dragged at as the tall of middle-class theorists who are planning Utopla and ignor- ing the practical, every-day pro- blems.

For the moment, the menace of Hitlerlam has prevented an open outbreak between these two Bec- tions, and Mr. Arthur- Henderson seems to have been called on this week to raiso another issue and plead for unity. He is calling on all the movement to defend de- mocracy, which is in peril, accord- ing to him.
In spite of all offorts for unity, howover, it is plain that the com- posite Labour Party of Socialists, trade unions,.. Fabians, and Co- operators, as we knew it before the last election, will never be the same akain.
The trade unions, who find the bulk of the money, are not content for outside careerists to make their policy,-and-there-are--more unlikely things than that within the next few months the Socialist element will be told by the trade unions to mind its own business.
