HOTEL PRESENTS IMPRESSIVE SPECTACLE AFTER DARK

Last night the Peninsula Hotel was illuminated with a million British dancing lights in the national colours of red, white and blue and presented a most im- pressive spectacle.

In the centre, and in front of the building, on a level with the roof, was fixed the large Royal Crown sign, which has been, loaned for the occasion by the electrical sub-committee of the P.W.D., by kind permission of His Excellency the Governor. This forms the centre piece of the whole scheme,

of the Empire Fair.

As the Governor resumed his seat, Wolf Cubs and Brownies who had taken part in the tableau, "Britannia" came forward, bear. ing beautifully decorated baskets, containing the choicest produce from their respective Dominions.

These they laid at the feet of the Governor's wife,

Little Dora Turner and Colin de Rome brought a basket containing the finest Canadian tinned goods. The vineyards and orchards of Australia were represented in n dainty basket brought forward by Edith Houre and Bryan Baldwin. Sheila Boras and Roy de Rome from South brought dainties Africa. Hui Po-chun and Clifton Large carried Hongkong's offer- ing. Honey and choice tinned goods came from New Zealand, being handed over by Amy Cowen and Sidney Pledger. India sent which were rare condiments, borne by Vern Dhabher and Nor- man Milton. Delicious

fresh fruits came from the New Terrl- tories and were handed over by Tong Yim-hung and Ho Shuk-plu. Finally, came Brittannia (Miss H. Hancock) and Henry Bunje, with a basket of beautiful red, white and blue flowers,

GOVERNORS' MESSAGE

COMMENDATION OF FAIR BY TELEPRINTER

The following message from I.E. the Governor to the people of Hong- kong and to the Press was tapped out! on the special teleprinter equipment, installed at the Fair by the Ilong- kong Telephone Company:

"I am now being conducted round the Empire Products Fair and am muel impressed by all that I have sern. The Fair is a great succesA and reflects the highest credit to the Organisers. It affords ample evil- ence of what the Empire can produce and of what can be produced here locally. I strongly recommend all to came and see it.

I take this opportunity of con- gratulating the Hongkong Telephone tele. Company na introducing the printer here and hope it will prove a Aucenas. It is in accord with that spirit of enterprise which has made the Company one of the most success- ful undertakings in the Colony."

COPPER DISCOVERY.

RICH FIND REPORTED NEAR CANTON

A rich vein of copper ore was discovered near Fung bluey Village In the Nambol District of Kwangtung recently. The discovery was made by a former Shameen merchant Lo Taook-ting, whilat he was proparing a burla! site. Subsequent investiga- tion revealed that tho chtire.area was covered with ore. The owners of the land are forming a company to develop the property.
